Those little hints deer give us

A couple of posts on another thread got me thinking we could all share a little knowledge. A lot of you guys watch deer all year long, while others only have "encounters" during hunting season. Tell us about those ear twitches and body postures that let us know what a deer is thinking...

When you catch them staring deep into your eye's, that means they're about to haul a**!

When they pretend to put their head down to "eat" but they're really still watching you and trying to trick you into moving.

I've noticed, when they have their head down feeding... if they get ready to raise their head and look around, 99% of the time they give a little tail wag just before.

if you see an un-ID'd deer moving through the brush but just seems to stop and disappear for 5 to 10 min at a time, you can bet he's mature, so get ready. . .

When hunting, never stare down a deer even if your in a blind and they can't see you. Some how some deer seam to have the ability to know when they are being watched. All predators stare down their prey before attacking and deer know this. If your watching a deer and it looks directly at you(even if your concealed in a blind), just stop looking at that deer and it should go back to doing what it was doing. I don't know how they know but with many years of experience watching deer they do. There are always exceptions to the rule but your better off always looking away when a deer looks your way.

That little tail wag is like them saying "everything is ok, but Im going to move a little" to the other deer. They will wag just before taking a step, too.

That's a good one, I believe they also see your eyes move or when you blink.

No ma'am. I thought this for a long time too but the real reason is this. They know something isn't right but deer dont continuously see in 3D. They're moving their head to line the cones up so for a second they will see in 3D. They aren't trying to catch you moving. If they KNEW what you were they'd already be gone.
