    Changes Strings and Cables

I was at the local bow shop the other day and the owner was telling me that if I were to replace the string he would recommend replacing the cables. With that said I had a few questions regarding strings and cables.

    1. Who here does it themselves?
    2. Is it difficult, I know a press is necessary?
    3. How often do you replace strings?
    4. How often do you replace cables?
    5. Has anyone noticed an improvement in performance (speed) when changing cables?

    1. I do it myself
    2. It is not difficult. You take off the old string and cables and put the new ones back on in the same locations. I always take a picture of how the old string and cable go on the cams just in case I get confused.
    3. At the first sign of wear or every 2 years.
    4. At the same time I change the string.
    5. When I install a new string and cable I make sure the string and cable are at manufacturers specs for length at 100 pounds of tension so I should have improved performance. I don't have a chronograph so I can't answer about speed.

I do not do mine myself, but I do have them changed as a pair. I shoot a Monster xlr8 and Ken at CCR told me every 3 years. If your string gets stretched pretty good you might show a little increase in speed after replacing. Probably not though.

I do my own, once a year. Probably not necessary, but cheap insurance vs. a several hundred dollar bow or 1K to replace the bow.

Not very difficult, you will probably need a press.

Now it gets difficult. Mine is a binary system (two cams), you will need to be able to check/sync the cam timing, set the intial sync, and where the draw weight peaks, etc. I've heard some say it's even important to get a single cam setup except for the sync. All of this is done bu twisting/untwisting the strings and cables. You will need a drawboard and bowscale to do it correctly.

Of course, you have the misc stuff, dloop, sight, rest rope, etc. Not difficult, but for me time consuming.

But, when it's finished, I have the pleasure knowing I set it the way I wanted, and I can tell when its setup incorrectly, and how to fix it.

It can take me a week maybe two to get it the way I want it, much quicker to take it to a Proshop. Unless your a hard-head like myself.

I do them myself. I have a press in the garage

Not difficult, but I recommend taking pics of the cams before you touch it. For most bows a press is necessary.

          3. How often do you replace strings?
          4. How often do you replace cables?
Really depends how often I shoot my bow. Before kids I replaced it yearly because I shot all the time. Now with kids I go about every 2 years.

          5. Has anyone noticed an improvement in performance (speed) when changing cables?
          No change.

I'm very picky about my set up so it usually takes me a days to get it just right.

I may have a hookup on discounted vapor trail strings. If you're interested in me pricing them out PM me the length and colors and I'll see what I can do for you. Go to their web page and spec out what you want.
