cost of hiring a handyman/contractor in Texas

I would be willing to bet that we have some handyman/contractor folks here on TBH or plenty of folks that have hired them before. What do you think your typicall hourly rate in the state of Texas is for a contractor/handyman that can do anything from fix a leaking sprinkler system to do a full house addition? I am just trying to get a better grasp on an hourly wage that I have been quoted. Thanks!

I'm also looking to get some tile work done. I've been quoted by some and was a little shaky when I got their estimates compared to some others...

Always been quoted by the job not hourly. Leaves way to much room for them to make extra money.

I've been paying $25 hr. and he's very good and does not goof off or stand around and talking on the phone.

Anywhere from $3.50 per hour to $350.00 per hour.

you generally get what you pay for.

I literally can't remember the last time I paid someone by the hour - it's always on a bid or per unit of measure basis.

Tile work is generally done by sq ft, and not by the hour. Most will have some kind of minimum charge.

I always bid by the job and not hourly. And good work comes at a price.

I have seen illegal handymen work for about $10 an hour around my place. I would assume it you want a legal worker then you would pay double or more.

You're asking a tough question lumping all those projects into one hourly or job rate.

Irrigation/ sprinkler repairs is relatively low-tech and is often done by guys who do landscaping.

Tile work is a more skilled job. I found a guy to do the tile work on our master bath off craigslist. He with my son helping (the carpenter) did a nice job on the very complex pattern with lots of cuts to get a diagonal pattern done. Then he ****'d up on the epoxy grout work which was a shame since that's what you see on the job.

A home remodel is another level of more skill and experience.

Craigslist is your friend, post you're looking for something to be done and see how many replies you get. The first pass sort I used was people who couldn't compose a basic sentence were ruled out.

Like others have said...most was for the entire job or by the square foot.

Hope I am not out of line, but was the bid itemized? Sometimes there are fees that are not listed in a bid that will drive the price up. Things such as permits, disposal, inspections and what not. They may not appear in the bid, but add to the total and make the hourly rate seem way out of line.
