    Power inverter question

I want to get a 750 Watt power inverter to be able to run 110V tools from my truck. All the units I find have heavy cables and battery clamps and what I want to do is to plug it into the cigar lighter outlet inside, and not have to go under the hood. 750/110 is ~ 7 amps, which should not be a problem with the truck's fuse (either 15 or 20 amps, I need to check).

Will I have a problem making up lighter plug connection and using that instead of the battery clamps?

Are you needing 750 continuous or 750 peak? If you need 750 continuous, then that will probably be a 1500 peak and that will be a bit heavy for a cigarette lighter.

You have to calculate the amps on the 12v side as well since that is what will be connected to your truck.

Yes you will have problems. I think the max you get out of the cigarette plug is about 150 watts or so before it blows a fuse. If you want to try to run a tool you will need heavy cables directly to the battery. Depending on the tool 750 watts may not run it. You may be better off running a battery charger for a cordless tool set.

you'll fry the regular wiring using the lighter method (that is if the inverter doesnt trip every 2 seconds..)

Power is power. 750W @ 120V is ~6.25A. That inverter will need a little more than 750W based on efficiences (call it 90%) so you will need about 810W. 810W driven by 12VDC is 71A !! Welder baby

Thanks. The one I was looking at (Black and Decker) has an input fuse of 35 amps. I think I'd have to hard wire to the battery as in putting in a high-end stereo system and run those 2 wires into the cab if I wanted to use it without opening the hood.

750 wont get the job done,, 1500 is a minimum and they do have to be hooked to the battery,, a plug style like that would fry any vehicle wiring i have a 1500 and it will run my skill saw under light loads,, i put large clamps on the ends so i can hook it up like a booster cables
