I was headed from Frisco to Amarillo for my drill weekend - in August of 2002. I got a late start and left about 3AM - I was supposed to check in at noon and meant to leave the night before but didn't hit the road until 3. I knew I was tired but I felt I could make it. Just to the south of Childress on the Northern side 287 there is a big rock sign that says welcome to Childress - about 200 yards south of that sign there is a small road going into a pasture - when I went off the road (287) I went across the small side road that lead into the pasture and then went off of it into the culvert which is about 8 feet lower. I went airborn at appr. 70mph - I hit the ground and then went up the embankement taking out a tree 3in. in diameter then went through the barbwire fence into the plowed pasture where my truck stopped and died while still in drive. When I woke up my truck was a mess, I got out and I remember looking in the driver side mirror and saying, **** I broke my tooth - I had broken one of my top front teeth as well as putting a large gash in between my eyes as well as a large gash right below my bottom lip. I broke the steering wheel with my face and I mean you could touch the leather together if you pinched it and because I didn't have my seat belt on I also hit the windsheild to the right of the rearview mirror. EMT's arrived quickly ( I think) and I woke up in the hospital a few hours later. The doctor told me one of the EMT's thought that there was no way I would be alive when they saw my truck - the initial impact off the side road slammed the bed of my truck into the cab a full 1 1/2 inch - and the truck was angled, like a shallow V. I feel very lucky to be alive - because I shouldn't be and I walked away relatively unharmed considering the severity of the accident. I know that for what ever reason, it was not my time. Now I don't drive if I am too tired, and I always wear my seatbelt.

This just happened a week ago.I was sitting at a RR crossing out in the county.I had been sitting there for a couple mins waiting on the train to pass. When I see a semi in my mirror then he is gone then I see him passing my van on the right side on a 2 lane highway and SLAMMED into the train. Tire tracks where less than 5 ft from me How he missed me I have know idea.I just thank god he did.

Christmas eve...... 1990. Driving my sisters 89 Turbo Coupe. Drizzly, foggy night. Hit head on w/a 1964 Ford Fair Lane (sp) 4 Door (HEAVY CAR). I was running about 55, he was running 70+ mph. No seatbelt and I went through the windshield but was only treated w/stitches at the local hospital, then released. Guy was high on drugs and alcohol. Multiple DWI's in the past.

I have never been so sore in all my life. Bruised sternum from the steering wheel. I couldn't hardly breathe, or even move for 2 weeks.

Oct 91..... Sitting at a red light. I was in the back seat of a 2 dr Olds Calais. Just left a Garth Brooks concert in Denison. Drunk driver rear ended us at 70 mph. My 2 sisters were in the front seat and a buddy was in the back w/me. Both of us are pretty big guys so it was cramped, to say the least.

I ended up w/a broken jaw and now have plates and screws in both jaw bones. Ate Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner through a STRAW!

Luckily the drunk this time was driving a 2 wd nissan regular cab. A bigger vehicle........ and it would have been REAL BAD!

Had a drunk almost take me out on Hwy 360 in Arlington several years ago. I was in the fast lane, in a driving rain storm and noticed some headlights. Before I knew it, he was about 60 yards infront of me, in my lane.....Driving the wrong way.....I just reacted and put it into the retaining wall, and for some reason he had enough brain cells left to swere the other way. Missed each other by inches. Couldnt even use the clutch my leg was shaking so bad.

Now that were on the subject, if you feel like reading further. My "oh crap story is below" Sorry for ramblin, but the other stories got me to thinkin about it.

Well I dont tell many people this story, but in June of 1989 I had an opportunity to take a trip to Russia for educational purposes. Dont ask.....Anyway on the return trip we flew out of Moscow into Berlin. We had a short lay-over at the Berlin airport to refuel the plane. They de boarded us and we had to wait in the military hell hole of an airport for about 2 hours. When they finally were about to let us on the plane, we noticed some guys talking with the flight staff, and appeared to be arguing about something. Come to find out, they were coaches for a soccer team wanting to get on this flight, which was headed to Frankfurt Germany. After telling them the flight was full, these guys persisted and we were asked to give up our seats. At the time we were ******. We had been in Russia for 10 days, and were ready for some chicken fried steak and iced tea. Frankfurt was one step closer to that dream. Anyway, we relented since the Berlin airport police were now taking interest, and agreed to a 9.5 hour bus ride to Frankfurt instead.

Well..........upon arriving in Frankford........we pulled into our hotel...exhausted and ready for some sleep. Before we could stand up, some german guy boarded our bus, whispered to the driver and they both stepped off the bus. Somthing was up. Well...an American from the hotel boarded and told us we all needed to come with him to a room they had set up so we could call our familes. Ok......can you explain sir?? Well....the plane you guys were supposed to be on crashed just after take off and reports are coming in that over 20 pasangers were killed.

Well........ shocked was not the word, and we were finally able to get inside, call home and notify our loved ones we had not been on that plane. Apparenlty ABC news was reporting the crash in the states, and members of our families had thought, due to the broadcasted flight number that we had been involved.

Well getting on that next plane was NOT easy, but we got back. Not many days go by I dont say a thank you to the man for gettin us out of that one.

It could have been worse, at least there were a lot of survivors, but 20 died that day.

Still have my bag tag and ticket for that flight.

In 2001 I was working in Brownwood at Tractor Supply and living in Rising Star. I was seeing a girl who lived at Thunderbird Bay on the lake. We also worked together at TSC. When we got off work together we usually went to her house at the lake to hang out. One of us would take 183 to the lake cutoff and the other would turn at Owens and take the backroad and see who could get there the quickest.

Well on this particular day I took the backroad. I went around a corner too fast and the caliche let loose and my truck slid sideways. I overcorrected and entered the bar ditch and went through a fence. How the truck didn't flip I will never know. Just so happend as I exited the truck the owner of the fence drove up. He looked at me and turned white as a ghost. He asked if I was ok and I said I think so. He said I wasn't and needed to get to the hospital ASAP. As most people who know me know I am not a fan of seatbelts. Well when I went through the fence I went across the cab of the truck, my head hitting between the OH **** handle on the passenger side and the windshield. The top of my head had a huge knot on it and where my eye hit on the handle it split my eye lid open all the way to the eyeball. I could close my eye and look out my eyelid.

After getting sewed up and a cat scan at the hospital the dr advised me not to bend over and pick anything up for 1 week. He said pressure in my eye could cause the stitches to release and my eye pop out. The dr. I saw was one heck of a sewer. I have had a ton of stitches in my life and everyone lease scars but you can just barely tell this happened. In fact if I didn;t shot it to you and point it out you would never know it.

I have had 2 wreaks but neither was to bad. But my close call was on I-10 east bound just east of Houston. I was headed back to the office after a long day to go home. I say cars swerving and brakes lighting up and was trying to avoid hitting anyone when I say what was coming in my direction. It was a tire with rim bouncing of the road and getting about 10 to 12 ft of air. I was luck I din't hit anyone and the tire didn't get me it hit the small SUV to my right. The tire hit the front part of the hood and went flying 20 or so ft. in the air. The driver kept going like nothing had happened but I could see his lady friend in the passenger seat freaking out. That tire and rim hit dead center of the SUV and they were really lucky that it wasn't the windsheild.
