    Hoochie Mama

For those of you that are experienced Elk hunters you may have already heard of this call. But since this Sept will be my first trip to bow hunt Elk (First time to hunt Elk) and being from Louisiana, you can imagine that I don’t know how to blow an Elk bugle properly. So after discussing a few things about the upcoming trip with my friend in Colorado and telling him no way was I going to bring and Elk bugle, he suggested I go buy a “Hoochie Mama”.

Needless to say, I had to laugh and was a little suspicious, but sure enough Primos makes the Hoochie Mama and I bought one. This is an Elk cow call (3 settings: Mew Setting, Lost Cow, and Estrus Cow) that all you do is place your thumb over a hole in the diaphragm and push in one smooth motion.

So yes, I own a Hoochie Mama and I’ll let you know how good she is in late September.

I would imagine that call has been around for close to 10 years. Good call. User friendly

Multiple friends use it and swear by it.
One was going into camp and a hunter was leaving to head home and he gave my bud that call and said they'll come running. Fast forward a few days and the guide was trying to call in a big elk and was having no luck and the elk was about to leave and my friend hit the hooche mama and he said the elk was on top of him to the point he had to jump out of the way from being run over

I carry 3-4 cow calls in my day pack - one being a Hoochie Mama. I like to use multiple calls when I'm walking through the high country. If you've ever been in close on a herd of elk, they are noisy. They chatter a lot, kick rocks and snap branches. I have never had an elk surprise me like a WT deer.

I've have personally shot a bull about three seconds after squeezing a Hoochie Mama in Colorado. It's a good call. Good luck.

They are a OK for a basic entry level call. They are very limited in what they do as far as estrus whines, prolonged notes....etc. My brother uses a hooch and we've had a lot of bulls hang up with it.

You would be better served getting a basic mouth reed cow call like the Primos Hyper Lip or Wayne Carlton's Estrus Cow. You still have time to learn how to use them and more importantly when to use them. Take them in your car in the mornings. Record yourself and play it back to see how you sound.

              Good luck on your hunt!

Thanks Everyone, I'll post pictures of the hunting.

I'm hunting in Section 25, scheduled for a week unless I harvest early, with a buddy who owns property which backs up to public land. Heck even if I harvest early, may stick around just to enjoy the great outdoors and hopefully cooler temperatures of Colorado.

I personally have had good success with the hoochie mama, but I think the best is to carry several cow calls and use them all, even on a single bull. I have had less bulls hang up when i switched calls on one sitting or calling session. I have not counted lately, but I bet i have 20 different cow calls. Like was said above, cows are noisy and they do not sound the same from cow to cow.

                    Mudslinger,
Can you recommend some other, realtively easy to use/learn how to use calls that I could add to my arsenal.

                    Unclefish,
I saw your suggestion on reed calls. I'll try those too.
