My wife's grandmother "Mammaw" came over and spent the afternoon with us today. We're having an Olympic Opening Ceremony Party tomorrow night, so Mindee and I were baking in advance for our portion (everyone has to bring something from another country).
We did Bierrocks (similar to pierogi), which was Mammaw's recipe, and a fresh lemon merengue pie (which was Mindee's Oma's recipe).
Both turned out stunningly well...and we got to listen to Mammaw tell stories of her childhood.
Turns out her grandmother was the nanny for Texas' own Admiral Nimitz.
Mindee's Oma (now passed on) was a nanny for a wealthy family in San Antonio...we were debating tonight if it was in the King William District...no way to know now I guess.
Anyway...wonderful evening with a neat ol' grandma. She's very slowly starting to forget things due to the early stages of dementia. She was on her "A" game tonight.
