Seems as if the JD's are just built a little heavier. I would find out what the weights of each tractor are and buy the heaviest one you can. I have a 54 HP JD and wish I would have looked at the Mahindras more. Ive heard really good things about them. I wouldnt go more "off brand" than Mahindra though.

I have a JD 3032, and it does what I need. I like the HST, especially moving dirt. plus you really want a 4wd for bucket work on the smaller tractors. The 3032 has less bells and whistles which is fine by me. I looked at the Mahindra and Kubota. Would have bought both, but got a deal on the JD and at the time, the dealer was close.

No bad experiences and this is my second one. First was a family partnership owned deal and I just needed one too much to have it gone 1/2 the time. HST does take some HP away, no doubt. If you are doing dirtwork and box blade work it is GREAT. However if you are doing shredding or till work it does take some HP away. I bought a 6 foot shredder, knowing it was on the upper end of what my tractor could handle, and I can really tell it when I get in thick stuff and need all 38hp. On normal stuff isn't a problem. I think this is really my fault and should have stayed with 5 foot PTO equipment. I bought a 5 foot tiller, and it handles it with no problem. GST would be nice too, but really being able to adjust speed when getting a bucket of dirt w/o clutching, which is what makes HST so nice. I would guess HST take about 20% of your HP. In low range maybe a little less.
I suggest you go rent several different ones, and see what you like best. It seems expensive at first, but if you can get 6-8 hours use out of one it not much more than running your own. I have a shuttle shift on a 90hp JD, and although it is a little hard to compare the two, I like the HST much better in tight spaces, and shuttle better in wide open spaces.
