I've been on a flight where we almost landed at the wrong airfield. It's not a terribly difficult mistake to make. Especially when you're practicing short field landings, there are a TON of strips out there, and if they aren't ILS equipped you can easily make the mistake...the distance between two fields gets smaller at 170 knots and a few thousand feet.
That said, glad the runway was clear and no one was hurt. I'm sure the pilot got a violation for landing without clearance. Ain't his navigator's fault.
Are we sure they were not suppose to land there? about 2-3 times a year one comes to Easterwood in college station. It is fairly unlikely that that bird landed where it was not supposed to be.
Most airplanes have a shorter take off to landing ability...
I doubt it was unintentional. Too many players involved for that time of day. I've been in the flight station and on the radio for many many landings and takeoffs in Mil and Civ airports. Night time, deserted airfield or two airports close together...maybe. It could have an emergency landing. In certain situations, the nearest suitable airfield is where you land. Period.
So was this just assumed to be the "wrong airfield" by the videographer?
We land our C-130's at Meacham and Alliance all the time. We even land at DFW on occasion. When we are on a road trip somewhere, we've landed at large and small commercial airports. Not unusual at all.
Via NYC Aviation, a C-17 Globemaster III landed at Peter O. Knight airport in Tampa, Fla., startling some of the crew on the ground.
Our friends at WTSP-TV in Tampa report that the plane was intending to land at MacDill Air Force Base about five miles away.
Witnesses and nearby homeowners near the airport, when the plane landed, say they could hardly believe their eyes and feared the aircraft may crash through the end of the small runway and end up in Tampa Bay.
“Two words: one starts with O and one starts with S,” said Don Sipila, who guesses that’s what was going through the pilot’s mind moments after his C-17 touched down on the wrong runway.
“It was extremely loud, the wings were wavering a little bit because he was doing a curving type of thing. You could clearly see this was a maximum effort short field landing. You don’t practice these things,” said Sipila.
“We all thought he was going to go off the end. Clearly this was the wrong airport for this aircraft.”
Sipila, a pilot himself, suspects the massive cargo plane got clearance to land at MacDill and thought that’s where he was landing.
“MacDill is about five miles right off the end of this runway and it has the same number: 22 lined up in the same direction. But it’s 11,500 feet long … as a pilot I could see it’s a long runway. This is only 35-hundred feet!”
