Homing Pigeon - release

We live in Katy and they have a great outdoor learning camp during the summer at Katy High. They shoot bows, BB guns, fish, canoe, make candles, and also get to take home a homing pigeon and release it.

Here are some quick shots we did of the release of "Speckles".

Speckles made it back safety and was in his coop the next day.

Afterward the kids took advantage of a good soaking for a little fun in the street.

When the pigeons are released they start flying in circles that gradually get larger until they find their bearings. Since we are only a short distance to the high school the birds usually only take 10-15 minutes to return to roost.

Pretty cool. My dad is a huge pigeon fan and has raised them his whole life. I remember once as a kid we went to visit family in North Carolina. Dad brought along some homers and released them once we got there. Sure enough, when we got back to Texas, they were safe in the pen.

that's really neat that the kids get to experience something like that...so many kids don't get those kinds of experiences. Also jealous of the rain y'all got down there!

They shoot at the competition BB targets. This is all up at Katy High. You don't find many schools anymore that would let you do that. Its really a great program....it fills up quickly.

Beat me to it! I'm a real pigeon fan too... especially if I have my trusty M-2 handy... We have shoots out on the prairie there... hope no "homers" happen to be coming by when that happens...
