I no longer pay anyone to sharpen mine. Used to own a tree service company and the guys who did the sharpening took too much off and also it heats up the cutters thus making the chains dull faster. At least that's what my experience was.

Northern Tool and Harbor Freight sell the bench type electric sharpeners. Some that own them say they work pretty good.

I bought a Stihl manual type sharpener that uses files and clamps to the chainsaw bar. You can also buy another manual version that Stihl makes that clamps to a bench. Or, Stihl also sells the commerical electric grinders.

When I started sharpening the chains manually with a file, the chains cut longer between sharpenings. It takes longer to sharpen with a file, but for me it has been well worth it and it's not hard at all.

Think I paid a little over $100 for the sharpener without the files. Not sure on the current price. Check Stihl's website for more info or visit your nearest Stihl dealer.

Jeff, in town (Conroe) on 105 E of 45 there is Outdoor Power Equipment 936-441-7888, those guys do it. I also believe B&C small engine 936-448-7802 does it (across from Walmart on 105 in Montgomery)

              Sharpening a Chainsaw

Spent WAAAAYYYYYY too many hours over a chainsaw in pine plantations in my younger days. Learn how to sharpen them yourself. There is a line on the top of the tooth, keep your file parrallel with that line and level with the top of the tooth and push away from you six or seven times each tooth (wear a glove on the sharpening hand). Make sure you have the right size round file.

Keeping your file just right every pass is key.

Dremmel makes a real easy to use chain sharpening attachement that I switched to 5 yrs ago. South Texas Mesquite is hard on a saw.

IMHO, buy a guide and a file, you'd be better off to learn this skill and be able to do it in the field.
