    Auto Insurance Question

If the tread comes off of your tire and damages your fender, is it a collision claim or other than collision (OTC) claim?

Not sure what you have but it's not collision.

I had that happen and the tire manufacturer paid for the damage. An adjuster picked up the tire. I got an estimate and they sent a check.

        Comprehensive.

Comprehensive (OTC) loss, however, as the tire failed it would be excluded from coverage due to the mechanical or electrical breakdown exclusion. Only the subsequent damage it caused would be covered, not the failed part itself.

Thanks. I knew the tire wouldn't be covered, but I was wondering whick deductible I would be paying. They are only $150 difference, but $ is $.

Did the tire go flat or blow out. I had the tread come off but the tire didn't go flat. It tore the heck out of my truck. If I remember right it was a Cooper. I called them and they wanted the tire. They wound up giving me a new tire and paying for the damages.

Yep, that's correct. The philosophy is you can't have a "collision" with yourself. Comp applies.

The tire never went flat, and only half of the tread came off.

You may contact the tire manufacturer as was suggested earlier, they might take care of it for you. What you have is a potentially "subrogatable" loss, in other words the insurance company may be able to recover the repair cost from the tire manufacturer after the claim is paid. They will likely need pictures of the damaged tire mounted on the rim, and tire/wheel assembly mounted on the vehicle, to support their subro demand. At minimum, they'll need the old tire, so don't discard it. It's a long shot at recovery, but there's a chance they'll get the money back, including your deductible which would be refunded to you if their subro effort is successful.
