    For the 10/22 experts

I have a couple of questions for the rimfire experts.I have a stock 10/22 that I am slowly converting to a more tactile rifle. So far i have a midwest industries rail, harris bipod and a BSA Sweet 22 scope (3x9x40 with changeable turrets). My long term goal is to get a better quality trigger, hogue stock, and a .920 barrel. I took it to the range today and was very unimpressed with my groups. I was shooting federal bulk ammo.My question is this was did it group poorly because:
    a) cheap bulk ammo
    b) factory trigger and barrel
    c) poor quality optics

    What do y'all think

    Barrel
    Ammo
    Trigger
    Optics

    In that order.

I just put a scope on mine and other than swapping out the stock and adding the scope its all factory. I was grouping good with the remington golden bullets. I have found my gun prefers those over the other bulk ammo. I was shooting the heads off of sunflowers with it at 50 to 75 yards the other day

Ammo. Try some CCI standard velocity or minimags. Copper plated. Run about 10 rounds through it to conditioner the bore for the new ammo. Most factory 10/22's shoot pretty well. A trigger polishing job and replacing the sear with a Volquartsen will help alot.

I think personally ur Ammo is ur #1 problem! The best bulk in my opinion would be Remington golden bullets. But I would shoot ccis if you really want accuracy! I WILL NOT BUY FEDERAL 22 ammo! I've shot bricks upon bricks like the majority of the people on here im sure and I've had more FTFS AND FTE from federals than any other 22 bullets. I've been shooting at turtles and had them shoot a foot high then short them everywhere in between I've had several hit the water 20 to 30 yards short! Idk why because federal is good ammo but there 22 ammo sucks!

If your a do it yourselfer you can easily disassemble your trigger group and using a little flitz polish and a fingernail buffing sponge thingy you can polish up your sear and trigger for a big improvement until you can upgrade. Heres a couple pics of what to polish. Just polish smooth and pretty. Dont remove too much.

Barrel and ammo are #1 trigger is prob 2 and scope maybe, it's a .22 so it's not gonna be a super tack driver but with mods to the first three it will get closer to that. I was actually looking at getting one of those BSAs tonite on the net for my .17, it has a var-x 2 3x9 on it but was looking at the illuminated reticles so I hope that choice of optics isn't too bad.

You need to try different brand ammo and see what it likes. I've seen a vast difference in group size with my guns using cheap ammo switching from one brand to another. Also, get rid of the barrel band, barrels usually don't like pressure points. Realistically, your rifle should be capable of 1"-2" groups at 50 yards with non target ammo.

My question is when was the last time you cleaned the bore. Next I would swap ammo that is your quickest change. When I first built mine I went through about 15 types. I do not know if they still make them but I put a GPC barrel on mine and my best 5 shot group is .16 at 50 yards. Most of the BSA scopes are made by Tasco, I have a target BSA on mine.

What size groups are you getting?

like other s have said, new bull barrel, stock, trigger(like PC with adjustable sear), are the first to replace. I can get about 1.5" @ 75 yards with bulk Federal. I shoot alot of 22, but mainly pistols. For me, federal bulk is much better than any others now days. Buy as many brands in small boxes as you can and see what shoots best in your gun.

To get better groups(MOA) I have to shoot Elay or Lapua. But it is just too much $$ for normal plinking.

The bore was clean before I shot it today- my groups were were about 2 to 3 inches at 50 yds...

                          Ditto others

Remove the barrel band and change ammo

If you are going to shoot BULK ammo I have had good luck with the REMINGTON GOLDEN BULLETS 36 grain. In addtion I had that same scope my factory 10/22 barrel and it would shoot 1 1/2 to 2in groups. My savage Mark II Bolt action with golden bullets will make the holes touch. If you shoot expensive CCI's you should be able to tighten it up a little. As far as changing your barrel it will help with the accuracy but I have to tell you after everything I have done to my 10/22 trigger, barrel, optics and stock it still wont worm hole them like my savage Mark II out of the box. I hope this helps

MIne shot about the same before I started changing stuff out. It is all fun and easy. Even the trigger was easy enough and it was my first.
