Did you know that a palm tree isn't actually a tree? It has no secondary growth (bark). What people consider their bark is actually just leaf scars from leaves that have fallen off. Their xylem/phloem can only support a certain number of leaves so in order to produce more leaves the existing leaves have to die, leaving leaf scars. Since they don't have secondary growth they are not trees - they are actually monocots. One reason why I consider them posers and hate them with a passion. BUT... to answer your question, palm trees need very specific soil and fertilizer with a lot of mycorrhizal fungi. Fairly easy to keep care of if you have the right soil.

Here is a link that can help you: http://www.sunpalmtrees.com/Palm-Trees-Resources.htm

PS: I kind of enjoy getting ornery about palm trees. I do hate them, but it's kind of a running joke with my family... I realize you probably (definitely) don't know that. All that to say: don't take my hatred of palm trees personally Let me know if that link wasn't helpful enough!

You are going to be really cautious of what you plant up there due to the cold weather.

We used to plant queen palms around our spa but after having them get frost bit 3 years in a row we quit doing that....

Windmill or pindo palms are cold tolerant and once established don't require much upkeep or water. I lost 3 Mexican fan palms 2 winters ago due to the cold, so I would avoid that variety.

Yes - You'll definitely need a Cold Hardy Palm like the Needle Palm - don't know if that's what you're going for aesthetically. The Queen Palm should be good to about 20 F, Bill's Unlimited. I live in Houston area and can't imagine it ever getting that cold here!

Don't think they grow fast at all. That's why you see people transplanting 30 footers.

Did you know that since a palm tree is actually not a tree that cats that make all the way to the top can actually get down by themselves. Thanks for subscribing to cat in a palm facts...

Elf - I'm in Magnolia and have killed several groups of Queen Palms out here, guess it must get down below 20 up here. My brother-inlaw had the same issue around his pool in Tomball / S. Woodlands area up Kuykendahl a few years ago too.
