    Adverse side effects from meds

Right now Im on an oral steroid and non-narcotic pain pills for my back. They were prescribed together and able to be taken together.

I just came off what felt like a MAJOR bad trip a little bit ago. The steroids are a dose pack that have to be taken at certain intervals during the day and the pain meds are every 6 hours as needed. I took 2 this morning and haven't had any more since.

The symptoms started shortly after taking one of the steroids at 615 PM. Nervousness, shakes, jitters, sweating profusely and slight dizziness. Felt like I was having serious withdrawals.

Problem is, the steroids have to be taken at certain times or it messes up the dose pack. I've been advised by my parents to NOT take anymore of either, but that will mess up the rotation, and my back pain is starting to come back as well. I have a long work night ahead of me and I can guarantee my back will be screaming in a few hours.

Im going to call the DR in the AM and try to get in to let them know the deal.

Should I not take anymore and just deal with the pain, or continue the dosage as was prescribed by 2 different doctors? Im leaning towards staying off them, but if I do, and have to get back on the steroid, Ill have to start completely over.

    Thoughts?

Forgot to mention, I started the steroids today and the pain mess yesterday AM. I've only taken 6 pain pills since early yesterday.

I will NOT take steroids in any shape, form or fashion...............

      What pain meds?

If I had to only take one, I would take the pain meds.

Going through 4 herniated discs, 3 mis aligned vert. and a pinched nerve right now myself.

The pain meds are Tramadol (Ultracet) and the steroids are a Medrol Dose Pack (methylprednisalone).

EDIT: My L4-5 and L5-S1 and bulging and compressed, pinching a nerve running through my groin area and down my left leg. They're doing the steroids to strengthen the area so phys. therapy will be more effective.

call one of those 24 hr Walgreens and talk to a pharmacist or try the Dr.'s # and see if they have an after hours number listed.

Does one doctor know what the other doctor perscribed, the med taken together could have a bad reaction when taken together. Just a thought.

I will say this............. the Tramadol did squat for me. I had to go back and get something stronger.

The steroids are no good IMO.......... I can't handle myself when on any type. And have had goofy side effects with them.

If you are having side effects like that then I would certainly stop taking everything and go talk to my doctor.

The first DR is a chiro, so he couldn't write a script. Told me to talk to my regular DR to get a script for the dose pack. Regular DR agreed with the dose pack and then called the chiro about the pain meds, which they both agreed on.

My wife is a pharmacy tech and said you must eat before you take the steroids. That is why you felt so bad. She said the pain pill will cause drowsiness as it is very common. She says they are safe to take together.

The Tramadol is working OK, but not killing the pain completely. I was given that so I could still work while taking it. It makes the pain tolerable, while not knocking me out or preventing me from doing my job. Its a decent compromise.

I snacked during taking the steroids, but not a full blown meal. Maybe that was the issue.

She think I should be able to keep taking them safely?

Sounds like a side effect of steroids. Only thing missing was the hot flash and an edgy feeling like you want to rage. Yes the side effect of rage/irritability can happen with nonanabolic steroids.

Edit...when I was on a dose pak it felt like I was going through male menopause. Sucked big time.

My FIL has reactions so severe they had to restrain him and keep him heavily sedated afte having a brain tumor removed. Neurosurgeon said it was the worst reaction he has ever seen. I try to avoid them myself.
