    muzzleloader primer ???????????

I just got my first muzzloader and it shoots #11 primers the gun shoots great but it allways takes closing the bolt action and pulling the trigger and then you have to do it again to fire. Its like the primers not seated good the first time but it happens every time?just wondering if anybody knows anything about it its a 99 model cva hunterbolt 50 cal.

Use a different brand of primer. I have a smokepole that had the same problem. It is caused by the percussion cap not being fully seated. There are slight differences in the sizes of percussion caps from different manufactures.

Change your breach plug out and use 209's and you won't have to worry about misfires. Also make sure before you load the gun that you have ran a patch down the barrel to soak up all the oil as it will foul out the shot.

          Breech Plug

Run lighter fluid (or some type of degreaser) through the breech plug. Then PRIOR TO LOADING, pop a couple of caps on it. It will sound like a .22, but it will clean it out.

If you still have problems, and its a sidelock, make sure the hammer lines up with the nipple (oh).

If none of this works, 209.

I Have Shot About 20 Shot Thrue The Gun In The Last Month And About 10 Extra Caps And It Has Always Fired On The Second Try

It sounds like the gun was dry fired or the nipple is just worn out. This will cause the edge of the nipple to flatten out and not allow the primer to seat fully. The cheapest alternative would be to buy a new nipple. If your going to do that you might as well change it out with a musket cap nipple and buy some musket cap primers. They are larger and give a much hotter spark and will just replace the no. 11 nipple. I have been down that road.

I have been there and done that already. Do not waste your time with the #11's or the musket caps in my opinion. Get a breach plug that uses the 209 shotgun primers. We have a hunterbolt as well and it came with both breech plugs. The 209 is a completely different animal. We had to do the very same thing with the #11'S. 209 IGNITION is the only way to go.

On that style you might want to get a musket nipple. They are just as good as a 209 primer, and on that model, easier to get out too.
