    Spearfishing Question for you Pros

I've got the itch to try spearfishing. Since I'm a newbie, I thought it might b best to try it with a pole spear at first. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

What kinds of fish can I get with a pole spear? Any brands you might recommend? Should I make my own?

    Thanks!

I just started also. I haven't used a pole spear, but JBL makes a nice one you can take down. You can also get pretty inexpensive spear guns from their website to for the beginner. You might check Ebay they have a lot of used and new spearguns for cheap. Good luck.

Spearguns, polespears, and dive gear for beginners, professionals, and everyone in between. For over 50 years JBL has been focused on one thing: making the best spearfishing equipment. Born and built in California. Made by people that love to dive and put food on the table the old fashioned way. Scuba and freedive.

Using the polespear is a great way to learn the basics it will hone your skills when your ready for a speargun.

i still love using my polespear for smaller fish under 15lbs

Get you a mask and snorkle and jump in and just go! I use a pole spear and its a BLAST! Just got to get in and figure out your aim but its not bad at all.

If you're going in saltwater, spadefish and sheepshead are plentiful around a lot of rigs and are easy to get with a pole spear. Both eat good also.

I've been wanting to try, do the fish really let you get that close with the spear?

Just don't try to shoot the biggest fish you can find until you are experienced. Had a buddy several years ago that shot a 80lb+ ling. He went from 10-120 feet deep in about 2.2 seconds he said. Made a bad shot and the fish took him down an almost drowned him.

I have been looking at the JBL D6-8 models. All reviews are 50/50 on it.

I use a Manny Puig polespear and it reaches out and nails them

A polespear is pretty easy to make. Just need a steel rod and some rubber tubing. Obviously not professional but a lot of fun and almost no cost.

I saw on speargun hunter the lady host was hunting and shot at the first fish of the day. Apparently the handle broke off when she shot and the body of the gun came back and hit her in the eye. There was a good amount of blood and she ended up going to the hospital 2 hours away. So moral of the story is to check the connection of the grip to the body of the gun and make sure there are no cracks if you buy a used one.
