    Any state workers here?

I was asked to interview for a job position with the state today, and I did not apply for the job. This was word of mouth from a friend of mine who used to work for me. He recommended me for a position as a concrete inspector for txdot. Well I was called and asked to come in and fill out a application and interview. My questions are
How is the pay? I was told it was based on working experience.
    How are the benefits?
    How is the retirement plan?
    Any perks?
Thanks in advance for any replys.

there should be an official position posted somewhere on the state site for this position. State is not known to be a top paying place.
retirement... From what I remember, you pay 6 % towards your retirement. They use or used the rule of 80 for retirement purposes. It is a good gig if you are young.

Perks... I don't know. You will get to know the good concrete guys fro mthe bad ones and know who to contact for personal work

I worked at Tx Dot for a few years in IT.

There was a official posting for the job but no qualified applicants. I was asked to put in a application because of my work history. As far as young I'm 41.

the reason I spoke of the official position... it should have the pay grade on it. 41 ain't to bad, 25 years in and retire with guaranteed income for life(unless it has changed).

If they asked you to put in an app. You have a little bargaining power if they offer you the position.

        Good Luck...

The job posting should show the pay. We have a ton of state holidays, you gain lots of vacation, insurance for yourself is good, for family is good but expensive, your experience will get you the higher ranked and paying position instead of starting at bottom of ladder. You won't get a raise unless the legislature approves it. If txdot is like us at tdcj and working short handed you should be able to make some overtime

You been there long enough to fall in rule Of 70? I started in may before the rule changed that September and was lucky enough that I'll be rule of 70

This job is based on experiencel, so pay is BOE. I know I will I will be taking a pay cut but currently I have no benefits. As far as overtime at this job it's a salery job and all overtime goes to comp time
