Are there any artifacts found near Spofford?

My buddies and I are heading to a another buddies place next week for some MLD action as well as hog hunting for a few days. It is more or less a getaway and we probably spend more time fishing than hunting.

The area is near Spofford and adjacent to the Kickapoo Reservation. I have been reading the posts regarding finds and such and just wanted to know if anyone was familiar with the area.

The only artifact hunting I have done was when I was 6-10 with my Mom near Sam Rayburn on a piece of land that a friend owned that had a spring on it. That was a while back.

What areas should I look for or key in on for best results, assuming that is even a good area to search?

    Thanks in Advance, MB.

Yep there are artifacts all over that region.....If you know where you are going and can pin point it on Google earth........look for bare ground adjacent to creeks.

I have a close friend who owns the Patrucia ranch just out of Spofford, and on that ranch is an old Pony Express building. It's pretty cool in it's own right.

Consider if that's still standing, although only partially, then there has to indian stuff too.

I'd look first at areas adjacent to creek banks preferably an area with little cover and on rocky ground. Also, look on the highest ground in general for the area if there are no drainages on the property...

Post up some pics of what you find! Good luck!

Thanks and keep the ideas coming. There is an old creek but more like a big ditch. I assume looking around that area for high spots would be a good starting point?

There are a few big valleys around and a couple of rocky outcroppings near the camp house as well.

Anything in particular I should key on in a certain spot?

Flint..look for flint pieces. When you do, pick them up and analyze them. Alot of people think arrowheads will jump out at you but that is not the case at all. Sometimes I'm on my hands and knees with a shovel trying to find some. We recently stayed on a ranch that had no prior knowledge of artifacts being found in the area. I knew better because of the location and us staying along a very old river/creek. As stated above, I found a high point along the river/creek that was fairly clear and rocky. That was my starting point. I walked this area first standing up looking at the ground and didn't have any luck. The next morning I went to the same area but this time I got down and looked alot harder. I saw a piece of flint, picked it up and analyzed it. Sure enough it had been worked on. It was a broken end piece of a pedernales point. Later on that evening I got my two boys out there to look and my oldest found a nice point on the surface in the same area underneath a scrub bush. I then got a shovel and dug underneath the surface where he found this point and we found a few more very old points. I was very happy to find these points but sometimes you really have to get dirty to find any. Keep that in mind. I'll try to get some pics up this eveing when I get back to the house.
