My boxer is eat up with mosquito bites!

I got up this morning and my boxer was eat up with mosquito bites. I thought he will be ok when I get home. Well, when I got home my son had him in the house and his neck had started swelling underneath, maybe from scratching, not sure. Anyway it was 5 o'clock so I called the vet real quick. The girl that answered said there was no vet in after I told her about my dog. She said just give him a couple of benadryl and he should be ok. Does that sound ok to you guys that have been around dogs alot? He weighs about 60-65 pounds. Let me know what you think. My biggest concern is giving him too much.

Pretty typical. I give my Rhodesian a couple everyday

If they get worse, might get him a steroid shot too

I usually give a large dog 50 mgs. If the swelling continues, he should probably be seen tonight at an emergency clinic if needed. May just be mosquitos, but I have never had a dog swell like you are describing. You can continue the benadryl every 8 hours.

Thanks for the advice. The swelling does not seem to be increasing so maybe it did the trick.

We had an issue with our last boxer. We woke up one morning to him panting heavy and he looked like he was ate up with mosquito bites. Of course it was a Sunday morning, so an emergency clinic was what we had to go to. They gave him a shot and things were better in minutes. Doc said he got into something and we never found out what, but it was hives rather than bites. Never happened again, and to this day we don't know what caused it...

It's funny your dog has on an A&M jersey in your avatar. We went to Tech and named ours Raider!

Why do you have to give it to him everyday?

They can have benedryl, i think it's like one pill per 25 lbs, but we usually only give one or two for our 100lb lab

It's a good time to start if they haven't.

Glad he is doing better. They can have 1mg per pound of body weight. There should be noticeable difference in condition within that day. If the benadryl doesn't help a vet can give them a steroid shot which almost always works. Its just not good for a dog to be getting steroids on a regular basis so everyone at the clinic was likely told to recommend benadryl as a first treatment.

Yes he is on heartworm meds with a flea and tick medication in it. Thanks for the help and your concern! Raider is almost back to normal this evening.
