    Indian Artifact - Mortar

My Dad found this mortar back in the late 60's in North Texas (near Jacksboro). He's had it displayed on his fireplace for years and I never had too much interest in it.

But with Garguy's thread going on I thought I would post it up for you rock hounds to look at.

He never found the pestle with it but still cool none the less.

Here is the bottom of it. Its extremely flat and level. Someone did a lot of milling to get it that way.

I have heard it called a metate, (mah-tot-tay) and the other piece called a mano.

Yep, that is what I call them as well. That one dished out very nicely! Great piece of history and thanks for sharing.

That is really cool. Can anyone guess how old or is that too hard to tell?

Very nice... my dad has a hallowed out stone "pipe".

Did he find it in Mexico? Can't really say since you can't cross with that stuff.

I need to take a picture of it next time I'm in South Texas. It's maybe 6 or 8 inches long by maybe an inch and a half to 2 inches in diameter. A hollowed out tube that I guess they packed with herb.
