Poor Shot Selection = Bad Name for Archery

I just got this story and pictures via email. I checked www.snopes.com and could not find where it is an urban legend circulating around the net. Also, it has a short email tracking list (my buddy, the hunter's brother, the hunter). Because of this, I am going to post it.

My reaction was amazment that someone still hunts with Alluminum arrows. Then I was ticked at someone taking a head shot at a young deer with a bow. Here is the story:

    ---------------
    Muzzleloader Season
    You won't believe this one.
I was hunting out in Sidney this past weekend for my muzzleloader buck.
Well I got him? I'll make a long story short.
First off, Mike kept telling me he saw a buck with an arrow through his
    head.
I thought he was full of it, but he kept telling me he saw it again.
Saturday evening we saw this buck jumping around going out of control from
    about 350 yards away.
Mike told me it was probably the one with the arrow in its head.
The buck was with another one that night.
The next morning I sat up in the tree stand and waited, all of a sudden at
about 10 minutes after sun up, there were two bucks that came right to the
side of my stand, 30 yards. I saw the arrow instantly and didn't know what
    to think.
Anyways, he ended up giving me a shot and I took him.
Looks like the arrow was in there probably at least a couple months or
    more.
No blood or anything and you could move the arrow.
    Now check out the pics!

Just for the sake of discussion, looking at the last picture...... maybe the deer was quartering away and the bow hunter miss judged the distance from his tree stand, (badly), and the deer dropped at the sound of the string, resulting in the impact point on the back side of the neck and exiting low on the opposite side of the jaw?

Just a discussion point, not making excuses for the picture taker or the person that shot the deer with the arrow.

My Alpine Bow would have gotten a pass through.

I'm with you RWC. There could a great deal of the story we don't know. It is fortunate that someone got to harvest the deer and end the agony the poor guy had to endure.

I think this has already been posted on here. Seems I remember lots of "bad hunter, thats why head shoots dont work....bla bla...." I also remember alot of people with stories about deer facing one way and impacted on the other side. Where the deer would turn compleatly around before the arrow got there. Deer ducking and turning and getting hit in the neck..... and so on.

Its a diffrent type of pic alright, and worthy of comments. It would just be nice if there wernt any bashing unethical hunter comments, since NO ONE here knows how this happened.

I can remember on more than one occassion where I have shot at a deer only to have the arrow pass over it's head, rump, or just over it's back due to a quick duck. This season for example, I had a doe come nervous as all get out. I knew the chances of her jumping my string at 32 yards were high because of her body language, but she eventually gave me a broadside shot and I took it. The arrow flew between her ears and stuck in the dirt right past her. I thought to myself, if that would have hit her in the head that would have been a bad deal. Fortunately, I missed her clean and nothig was hurt except my pride. There are too many scenarios that could have happened in this deal to bash the hunter based on pics and without knowing the whole story. Just my .02.

No one but the shooter knows where he was aiming

Shot placement witha bow for all intents and purposes is random

At the angle of the arrow, looks like the shooter could have got a good quartering away shot in the proper place. But like its been said. I wasn't there.

Then again, the shooter could've been shooting at his head.
                          Ya never know...

Thanks, it was shamelessly stolen from another web site I frequent.
The origonal poster assured us it was a real trail cam pic. The best anyone could figure is the coon had just fallen off the feeder and was caught as it was landing.

The first deer I killed with a bow was 30 years ago.Back those days, most compounds were getting arrows out there at less than 200fps.The bow I had at the time was rated at 180fps!!!!!!!!!I shot behind the shoulder on that spike, while the slow arrow was making it's way on my well placed 20 yard shot, the spike decided to escape death by doing a duck, turn and run.His moves ended up being fatal anyway, because the arrow hit him in the throat and cut one of his arteries! That was not were I intended to shoot him,but that's what happened. That could be what happened on the buck that this thread is about.
