    STI .45 ammo question

Is +P OK to shoot. Occasionally? Daily? Never?

I'm thinking of trying out Hornaday Critical Duty 200gr +P if it's cool to do so...
Ballistics are a tad better than the same grain/type 10mm.

I'd call or email the manufacturer to be safe. If I had to guess, it might be okay for self-defense but I wouldn't feed a steady diet of them into an expensive 1911.

          That gun will handle it.

Where are you seeing critical duty in 45 ACP? They don't even list it on their website that I can find.

              I see Hornady TAP 45 ACP 200 +p but it's only clocking 1055 fps.

A 10mm shooting real 10mm loads pushes a 200 grain Hornady XTP bullet at 1250 fps out of my Glock 20 with the factory barrel and just over 1350 fps with my 6" barrel.

              10mm rules!

+P just means a hotter round. If it's chambered in your cal in a modern gun( which yours is ) you can shoot it. Some guns shoot +P better and some don't.

Texag93, those are some nasty rounds! Ive got mine set back and treat them almost like gold lol! Wish they would start producing the talons again.

1911's cycle with a balance between the recoil spring and the main spring. These need to be setup to match the recoil of the load you are using. That said, I do not think you will run enough rounds to do any damage. If we were talking 5,000 to 10,000 rounds the answer would be different.

Your right Mike. The 45+P was not "Critical Duty" but the 45+p 200gr XTP. In Hornaday's ballistic chart the 10mm XTP clocked in at 1050/490 out of a 5" barrel and the .45+P 200gr XTP was 1055/494 w/5" barrel. Nothing that I have chronoed myself.

Lets shoot each other and if either of us lives then they can lay claim to...
                        j/k bro

Now what do you think of the Critical Duty for a 9mm???

What is so special about those that any other high quality modern hollowpoint ammo wont do? Really, you can get reliable expansion from pretty much all ammunition makers these days. Is it the Lubalox coating that people ooh and ahh over?

Not terribly enamored with any of the new hornady offerings. Especially considering the price.

For a few dollars more you can get a box of 50 (vs 20) in win ranger t and several others.

It might be my Sig but Ranger didn't shoot as accurately as Win PDX1. Haven't tried the Hornaday in either gun, just curious about it.
