I just got back from a family vacation in Florda and while I was there I decided to take the kids fishing. We brought our zebco 101s and that was all. I went to a local tackle shop and asked for advice and bought whatever they wanted to sell me. They told me that the area I wanted to fish had a few big redfish, but my zebco would do just fine. I really wanted to catch fish, any fish, for my boys. We didn't care what we caught. So she sold me some baitfish catchers. They are basically 6 hooks hanging down about 6 inches apart with a weight at the bottom. She said when I get bored with that to put what I catch on the baitfish catcher on a big hook and toss it out with a carolina rig for big fish.
We caught a ton of 6-12 inch bait fish. We would catch 3 and 4 at a time. After we caught about 30 we decided to use one for bait. We hooked it up like she said and tossed it out. Within 5 minutes we had a bite. The fish took it ran and snapped the line. This happened a total of 5 times before I went into town and bought a heavy duty rod from walmart. After I bought the big rod, I only had 2 break the line and one straighten the hook.
When I hooked these fish, they would run up to 100 yards down the bank and after I slowly turned them, they would run out into the open water. It took an average of 15 minutes to reel them in. I am not sure if it is because they were so strong or if it was because I was fishing a really strong current.
When we were at walmart buying the rod, we decided we would need a net since the fish were obviously big. We just didn't get a big enough net.
These are my first real salt water fish and the biggest fish of my life. I landed a total of 10. My boys were scared of the big fish and didn't want to go back after the first one.
All were returned to the water for the next guy.

My 12 inch sandle for reference.
