    Acreage per horse?

Like I posted earlier my Dad just bought 30 acres south of Paris....and I have been hearing tons of different opinions on how many acres you should dedicate to each horse. So I thought I would ask you guys, if he is gonna have 2-3 horses, how many acres should he dedicate to them? I guess area and rain and food source has a lot to do with it, so again Paris, TX. What ya say?

I guess you know you should feed them even if you turn them out on endless grass, right? I have 3 horses on 6 acres of dry land coastal. They are doing fine now with just supplementing a little grain, but if it turns dry I immediately supplement with coastal round bales. That wasn't much fun last summer with horse quality round bales at $150.

Yes I do know I have to feed em after turning em loose, and thats what I was thinking, prob around 5 acres with supplemental feed until it gets crazy dry

I don't have much experience with horses, but your question is something that's been addressed a lot by agriculture experts. It depends on factors such as the type of pasture you have.

I found this document (from Oklahoma State University) after a quick Google search:

I have five acres and five horses. Had six horses up till about two months ago. As long as they are rotated on pasture, fed grain, hay and kept up in their pens after the evening feeding we have never had a problem.

a horse will do a number on grass. they pull it up by the roots. if you are only gonna dedicate 5 acres and not rotate them, i don't think you will have grass very long. don't turn them out on tall green grass either, they could colic if they are not used to green grass.
