out of state, in person, gun purchase question

So, let's say I go on vacation to Arkansas and Louisiana and end up finding a firearm I want to purchase it, what issues are there?

IE, any reason they won't sell to an out of state resident say like at a pawn shop or Cabela's or BPS or whatnot?

Also, what implications in traveling with it back to your residence?

My concern is just to be informed beforehand

I think in states that border Tx there isn't an issue. Maybe BPS or big box store like that there may be but your average gun shop I think you can purchase.

Pretty sure you can buy a long gun anywhere, but must be a resident of the state to buy a pistol. (Maybe you can buy the pistol there but it has to be shipped to a FFL in your state for pick up? I dont think you can just walk into Academy and buy a pistol and leave with it if you dont live in that state.)

Face to face, non FFL, used gun, buying from a buddy .... I dont think it matters.

I picked up an M1 Garand at a pawn shop in Shreveport must have been 15-20 years ago along with a stainless 10/22 and another 22 from a shop in Tyler or Longview or somewhere in east Texas around that same time and and I remember filling out paperwork at all three pawn shops but that was it, no wait or anything...just wondering if things have changed and or since my eyes are peeled for certain 1911's currently....

I know it's legal to pack the pistol in your vehicle, right, but what about when traveling like that?

crud, so I can't purchase a pistol out of state? not even if I had them ship it to my FFL?

Nope. Maybe in bordering states but some states don't allow ftf, and I tried to buy a long gun from FFL in Missouri he said no cause I was non res.

If you could have an FFL agreeable to that before you left I don't see why it would be any different than buying a gun off of gunbroker and having it shipped to yor FFl.

I think that it goes by the laws in the state where you purchase if you can buy being an out of state resident. How you can legally travel through a state on the way home also depends on that particular state's laws.

I don't think that ATF has any applicable laws as long as an FFL completes the required paperwork (if it is bought new). Texas allows the purchase of out of state firearms, ammo, etc. as long as it complies with the other state's laws.

There is no blanket rule and you will have to find out what laws apply in the state where a firearm is purchased and what laws apply to traveling with a firearm within any state that will be crossed.

On long guns if that states law regarding purchase is the same as Texas you should be able to buy. Handguns would have to be shipped to FFL dealer for you to pick up. Where I work we receive out of state purchases regularly.

You can buy guns anywhere in the US.

when you buy a long gun from an FFL out of state you may take delivery immediately if the laws of that state allow it. You can also have it shipped to your home.

However, Federal law 18 USC section 922 requires that handguns bought out of state be shipped through a licensed dealer in your home state. You canNOT take possession of a handgun outside of your home state.

Sale and DELIVERY by a Texas(or any other state) residence to a non-residence is prohibited by federal law. Sales are allowed but you must go through FFLs in each of your states.

                      Hope that helps.

You can buy a long gun anywhere as far as I know but they won't sell you a pistol unless you live in the state of purchase.
