The older rolled/stamped ones are awesome. The newer milled ones are still awesome, but not quite as awesome. I've got a 229, used to have a rolled/stamped 226, and dream of a 228. They are high quality, reliable, smooth shooting, and expensive.
I don't have any experience with the newer polymer framed models, so someone else will have to chime in on those, but you really can't go wrong with the 226/228/229.

I've been carrying a 229 on and off duty for over ten years. Even if I had a choice, I would pick the Sig. Like every other major firearms manufacturer out there, their quality control has slipped some in recent years. Just stay away from the P250 and you can't go wrong with a Sig. The P250 is garbage.

I love the DA/SA trigger! I shot my first IDPA match with a buddies p229, and fell in love with the sigs... its the only pistol I dont have to play with to figure out the accurate grip in my hand... it fits my hand and indexes right every time, without having to fiddle with the grip to line up the sights...
I wanted a p229 for a long time after that, but couldnt really afford one... stumbled across the sp2022, the polymer framed cousin.... very different design, but very similar ergos, and for < half the price of a 229. I picked one up in 9mm for $400 at academy... I absolutely love it.... I train to cock the hammer before first shot, unless its an arms-reach shot...
The double action trigger pull is stout, and long, but the break is clean and the reset is fairly short(shorter than the beretta m9 i had)... but the SA trigger pull is butter smooth, and breaks clean... I can hold a 7-10 inch group at 20 yards with it, in what I call defensive fire... in otherwords, as fast as I can aim and pull the trigger... slow fire, I can 10 ring it all day at 20 yds... I've got about 500 rounds of winchester white box through it, without a single failure...
Downside, extra mags are not cheap... paid $40/ea for Factory spares from midway. Only folks that make after market is a company called mec-gar... they're +2 rnds bigger than stock, but dont have the IMHO vital finger catcher... they're not much cheaper than factory, but good prices can be found every once in a while...
Other downside, not many manufacturers of custom fit holsters out there for the sp2022.(plenty for p226/p229/p239 and others) Though Crossbreed does make a good tuckable holster for it.
Now the only problem i have is not getting to shoot it as much I'd like...

I'm looking at the Pro 2022 Basic .40 S&W are the P250 .40 S&W modular.
They both fit in my budget and should be fine for what I want home/ self
defense. I plan to shot every other month are so with the wife to just stay
comfortable with are pistols. Also to get CHL.
Thanks for all the advice.
