Question about a garge sale problem

So here is the story. My farther in law and I where moving some things from the old house to the new one. On our way we so a lot of golf culbs in a yard with a table and some other stuff. As we drove by we saw a sign that said garge sale at that address so we went back to look. I went up to the door and knock on it but there was no one home so we went around to where the culbs were. At this time me farther in law went over to the back fence it was open and called out to see if anyone was home. This is were it gets a little crazy. At this time a truck pulled up and a man jump out and started telling us that to get out of his garge and that was a could way to get shot. We tried to tell him that we were just trying to see if any one was home, but he did not want to here that and continued to cuss us and told us to leave or he was going to shoot us. We just turn around and left.
Can you call the cops on someone at there house if you get told by them that they are going to shoot you even when they have a garge sale sign up?

They might be able to explain to him that if he didnt want people in his yard he might want to remove the signs

just be glad he didn't do something stupid, regardless of how innocent the situation was...he didn't know you from Adam and for all he knows, he might think you were trying to break in...heck, he could have a house full of dope growing and that's why he was cranky....
