    Teach them young. (Long read)

Mods, if this is in the wrong area sorry, please move.

OK, this whole thing started off EARLY yesterday morning. Little back story, I have been having fun showing my son how to spot sign of animals. I started off small with rabbits and the other day we were walking our dogs around the block and Corbin runs up to me with something in his hand and say; "Daeyy, wab poop." Sure enough I look down in his hand and he is holding rabbit poop...great. So instead of the "Oh put that down..." I asked him; "Good, now what do we do"? "Shewt wabit" "Yup, we shoot the rabbit. What else?" "Eeet wabit". "Yes we don't waste it, we eat the rabbit." So I am BEAMING with all kinds of happy.

OK, now yesterday morning we are getting the Jeep ready to go to my mom and dads. Corbin is with me and sees a rabbit in the neighbors front yard. It just so happens that we were putting our bows in the Jeep. The next thing I know Corbin is taking off in the direction of the rabbit saying; "Daeyy shoot wabit...shoot wabit." So I am grabbing him and trying to explain that we are in a neighborhood and shouldn't do that. So we ended up 'hunting' down the rabbit till it disappeared behind some bushes, thank you God. I really didn't want to shoot a rabbit in our front yard with his bow. I know I am the Dad and all, I kind of got caught up in it all though.

So fast forward some, we get to my Mom and Dads and he is still going on and on about the rabbit and shooting one. So Corbin and I went on the COE property and didn't see anything, but he was happy and talking about that now...after he got the cactus needles out of his foot.

Now fast forward some to about 6:30, I look out into the back of my Mom and Dads and what do I see...2 rabbits. I go over to Corbin and look at him and ask "Corbin, do you want to hunt rabbit?" "Yes". "OK, Daddy will shoot, you track." So we head out the door and he starts looking and it didn't take him too long. (I wish I could show you a picture of his tracking face...there is a light on there folks). So he has his hand near his eye and he is pointing to the rabbit. "Der daeeyyy, shoot wabit". "OK buddy...shh." We have gotten in at about ~20 yards, pull, stop breathing, aim, release. I hear the pop of the rabbits ribs and I see it bolt. My sister in law and her boyfriend are there and they find first blood and I track down the little rabbit. I popped him right in the ribs and clipped the heart, REAL short track job. So I grab the little guy and bring him to my son. Corbin started to look a little freaked out, but I had him pet the rabbit and I asked him, "What do we do now?" "Eeet wabit". I told him yes and we skinned it and it is in the fridge marinating.

All in all he enjoyed it, but I found out that it is a very thin line between freaking him out and turning him away from hunting and having him love hunting. I don't know that I did the best job, but I don't think I did the worst either.

Thanks for sticking around for this one.

Great story! We need more threads like this and less threads about ice chests.

Congrats on time well spent with the boy!

I don't think you are walking a fine line at all. He obviously looks up to you and that is what matters.
