    Kayak rigging

I have just purchased my first kayak a pelican 10'. I am wondering if we have any kayak fisherman on the green scree that can help me with ideas of rigging my kayak out. I have seen a few ideas that I will probably try out. I need some dry storage ideas, I don't have a whole lot of space being its only 10'. I've seen like more rod holder ideas and stuff like that but if you guys can help me out that would be great. Here is a pic of what I'm working with Click image for larger version

You can get lots of ideas at www.texaskayakfisherman.com. I used to have that same little boat. Only mod I did was put an anchor trolley on it.

Looks good so far. I always carried a straight gaff with me so when I paddled into the shallows (2-3 ft.) I would just push the gaff through a scupper hole and into the ground, anchoring me while I fished. Just pull up the gaff and paddle on. Anything deeper and you'll need an anchor. Get lots of elastic chord tiedowns too. You're going to really like kayak fishing.

an anchor trolly is a good idea. i agree go on TKF and look at the rigging section. I would add a rod holder in front of you, i like flush mount scotty's but to each their own. then you can get on Austin Canoe and kayak and get dry bags and covers to make yourself a dry storage behind your seat. or in the front.

Wife and I just bought 2 of that exact model yesterday at Academy. Gonna try them out on the Guadalupe between Comfort and Sisterdale tomorrow. I'll be watching this thread.

Wow, great setup Chuy. Does the bimini tip get in the way of casting?

if i have it up (it folds back) somewhat if im casting overhead, but i just cast around it..

                    GO WITH THIS ANCHOR!

The other flip out ones dont catch well enough, this 2lb will claw right into wherever you throw it..

There are many youtube videos that walk you through the steps for various DIY kayak upgrades and TexasKayakFisherman.com is a must see if you are just starting out. One I use a lot is a piece of 1 inch PVC pipe (cut on a bias at the bottom) about 4ft long with a rope attached to one end and the other to your kayak - pull up to your favorite "shallow" spot and twist it into the sand. Works great as a "hold down" stick either while fishing in the yak or out while wade fishing. When you're done, paddle up to it and twist again - slips right out. I keep mine in the bungee rod holder on one side of my yak.

Also, you can buy cheap waterproof "Fish Finder" units (I've got an Eagle on each of my yaks) for about $80. The transducers will shoot through the hull if mounted inside. A small 12v battery inside a watertight container (I use a plastic kitchen container) and you're fishin! I don't really use it for locating fish but it's really handy to know what the contour of the bottom is and your water depth. Good luck!

After looking at your photo again, I realized that you don't have access to the inside of your yak - YET! The round area right in front of your seat can be cut out and replaced with a screw in cover. If you do this you can store stuff inside your kayak and place a transducer and battery for a fish finder. BUT - be careful if you do and make sure you use plenty of sealer to keep water out.

I did an anchor trolley and installed cleats on both sides front and back. I got them at wally world for cheap. I also got 2 flush mount rod holders for behind the seat so my rods are out of the way when paddling. I found a humminbird fish finder cheap that a guy had never used and installed it with a shoot thru transducer for finding structure and such. I have a couple of other mods I want to do as well, but it works for me and is alot of fun. Good luck.

I second what Chuy said. You need rod holders in your crate. That keeps the reels from getting "paddle drip" on rigs that you might put in the flush mount rod holders behind the seat.

Also, check out texaskayakfisherman.com and look at the kayak rigging forum.

                            my 2 cents.
