If your house has plywood floors, it's probably easier to pull up the floor and replace the wood that scrape the old thinset. I posted on the DIY section a bathroom repair with tile I did, and found some tricks there that may help you, like I used a 4 inch chop saw and masonry blade to cut all my tile instead of renting one.

It's a concrete slab, I'm not about half way done with the project. The thinset got easier toward the middle of the floor. I can't believe the work of some contractors. On a couple of tiles they used the grout to hold the tiles in place.
I am wearing a mask so the grey gold isn't that bad.
The masonry chisel has made pretty quick work of the thinset probably not as quick as that grinder but not as messy either.
I've quickly learned that jogging pants are the way to go when on the floor crossing legs and folding them in all the different ways because the first night I had my starched cinch's on and about wore the inside of my legs raw.
So time, comfort, masks, some good ole mixed drinks and some good ole red stiegler and off I go to the turtle races/carnival....
Anybody do tile work for cheap?
