    Varmint Hunting Question W / Foxpro

    This past season I noticed a huge increase in coyote activity, I heard them almost every morning right after sunrise. I bought a jack in the box by foxpro today but I'm a rooky when it comes to varmint hunting. My questions are;

    Do I need to set up before daylight?

    Since I only hear them in the morning would it be a waste of time to hunt them in the afternoon, evening or night?

    There's a built in speaker, is it loud enough (for those of you that have one or have used one?)

    I hear the yotes in an oat field below my stand if I set the decoy in the middle of the field (no vegetation right now, wide open) so the critter thing can be seen from far away will this be too obvious? I would dig a hole to hide the box also.

    Thanks in advance..

    I would be ready right at 30 till sun rise. I never did bother to hide the box on the decoy. March has always been prime time(for me any ways).
    I would cut the sound off on the decoy and spend the 12.99 on a Haydel Gov. Hunter rabbit call. The worse you sound the better!! Easy to use. I never licked the little sound out of the decoy. I only used it has a decoy while hooked up to the fx-3. Use the wind. Watch your scent.

      You can call coyotes in anytime of the day or night. If they think there are easy groceries to be had, they'll come runnin'. There's another thread right now from wilded showing pics of some fox he called in during daylight. Pretty cool. It's exciting watching them come in during daylight. It's also fun seeing their eyes bounce closer in the red light of a spotlight with a red lens at night.

          I wouldn't worry about how much volume you can crank out, it will sound fake. If the coyotes haven't been hunted much, probably won't matter much. But how loud can a little mouse sqeak any way? Or a rabbit...keep that in mind. Then just move later if you don't see anything. If they are close, they will be there in a few minutes.

            First light and late evening are best. You can hunt at night by using a red filter on a Q-Beem. Always play the wind. Yotes have a nose like you can't believe. Does the squeaker have a remote? If so let it play for a minute or so. If nothing shows in 5 minutes or so go with a hand call or cassette with a jackrabbit tape. Typically a yote will come in on the run.

              I think that varmint hunting may be the most fun I've ever had with my clothes on! You can call them at any time of the day or night. Play the wind and try to keep an open area downwind of you so you can spot them trying to circle your setup. Start calling quietly so as to avoid spooking off anything that might be close to you.
              Just get out there and hunt as much as you can and try to learn from every setup. Keep notes about what you did, conditions and results of each setup and it will amaze you how much you will learn.

                can't go wrong with jackrabbit sound...can coax them in with squeeks or kissing the back of your hand...start out with very low volume...trust me they can hear it...be as concealed as possible and as scent free as possible...have your gun in ready position...they may only present a shot for a split second...if they are at a dead sprint and won't stop for a shot...bark at them...or if they come in and don't like what they see, or smell you and take off...bark at them...may give you one last chance at a shot...don't go out and call the same spots everyday...good luck...it's a blast

                  When I'm hunting, I'm hunting predators probably 90% of the time. I have a Foxpro for daytime calling (FX3) in addition to thier Snow Crow Pro model that is mounted in my truck with two large speakers for nighttime hunting. Do I love Foxpro? You betcha! Can you call predators with a $12 call? Absolutely. I call many times from sun down to sun up, so my lips can get more than a little raw from blowing on a call. I also like the diversity of sounds that I can put out there to help bring those coyotes, fox, bobcats, etc. into range. I also like having the remote capability (during the daytime) so that the noise isn't coming from me and I can get away with extra movement, etc. since the predator is focused on the source of the sound and not me.

                  If you're just starting off, I'd suggest ordering a good wind-powered call and then if you're hooked you can look into the digital callers that will run hundreds of dollars.

                  Keep us posted on your progress!
