Imagine how tough it is to play an actor playing a character as the actor at a younger age.
Afterall, we all think of Gus as Duvall...mannerisms and all. So the actor playing a younger Gus had to channel Duvall in order to even play the character...and I think he did...and got progresively better as the series went on.
As far as the lack of age and dust. Many of the buildings were just being built or completed.
As far as the rangers looking like hillbillies. Well, the first rangers were a very VERY rough outfit and the story does touch on this by some of their actions as well as who they end up recruiting when they raid Blue Duck's camp and recount how they were recruited as well.
If you go to Youtube.com and look up Lonesome Dove you will find the bar scene where Gus busts the tender's nose. Behind the bar is a photo of the two rangers in younger times. Dressed like Pinkerton (?) men? That didn't fit the mold of the first rangers at all.
I'm interested in seeing what they do next with the time between nights 2 and 3. The mini-series missed some action there and it might make a good T.V. movie.
Also interested in the possibility of movies that tell the tale of the rangers' adventures before they settled for a long while in Lonesome Dove.
