New Hunting Season Proposed for Domestic Cats
The Texas Domestic Animal Control Department (TDACD) will meet in Austin to discuss a new open hunting season on
domestic and wild feral cats. The purpose of this proposal to return cat hunting hopes to help decrease the extremely large
numbers of roaming cats in and around all large and small cities and communities in Texas. Throughout the state of Texas,
cat season would start in January 2013, once passed. Cats were once subject to “game management” in Texas, and an official
hunting season once specified “cats, coyotes, and predatory species” in what was called “Varmint Season”. The law
changed in the early 1980s when reformers managed to end game controls for feral cats.
Cats have become a nuisance animal. They get into trash, flower gardens, they walk on people’s vehicles and kill birds and
are extremely overpopulated due to uncontrolled breeding. This new cat hunting season, if passed, hopes to eliminate some
of these nuisance problems, while providing a viable and enjoyable sport for suburban hunters.
There will be rules in place that the TDACD are currently working on, for example: You can only shoot cats on your own
property, property you have permission to hunt, and vacated properties. As of now you can only shoot them with a bow and
arrow or a crossbow. With the new law legalizing gun suppressors, TDACD is considering the .22 caliber series rifles for cat
extermination. This of course includes the .22, the .22 magnum and the .22 Hornet. If approved, these calibers can only be
used to shoot cats with the noise suppressors. Apparently this provision will insure that while killing your neighbor’s cat you
won’t disturb your neighbors at the same time with loud gunshots.
There is a new organization in Houston supporting the new cat hunting law. It is called the Cat Hunting Association of Texas
(CHAT). They are preparing an across-the-board Texas contest for cat hunters. They will be giving away cash and prizes to
the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each county in Texas. The president of the Galveston Cat Hunters of Texas chapter will
be taking $10 for each contestant in entry form money.
The competition rules are simple. To confirm each kill you must provide ears and tail from each dead cat. Cats may also be
skinned and the pelts turned in to the judges.
Local chapter president of the Cat Hunting Association of
Texas (CHAT), R.A. said, “This is shaping up to be a great
cat hunting tournament.” He has already received hundreds
of phone calls from Galveston County residents wanting to
sign up for the contest.
The motto of the Galveston County chapter Cat Hunting
Association of Texas is “IF YOU LET YOUR CATS
ROAM, DON’T EXPECT THEM BACK HOME”.

law, please email steve@SeabreezeNews.com
PS: I’m just reporting the news to keep you folks informed.
Please do not get angry with me! Steve
