My sons bday was a few weeks ago and at his party he told his mom and I that what he really wanted for his birthday was to go fishing w me. We tried to make plans a few times but between little league baseball, high winds and and all sorts of other things it hasnt worked out. I knew I had to be downtown some today for work and was already contemplating leaving early and hittn the surf for a couple hours beforehand. At last minute right before bed, mamma said that lil man could go with me this one time. Normally she'd never, ever let him miss school, but he's made strait A's all year and has only missed 1 day previously and had been asked to enter the GT program, so mamma said he'd earned it! I was pumped, I just knew we were gonna catch fish and knew the look on his face when I woke him up at 4am this morning and told him to grab his fishing pole would be priceless! Needless to say, the trip didnt dissappoint. We were in the water side by side at dawn, just west of Galveston, me rigged with a charteuse spook jr and him w a poppin cork and shrimp. Surf was perfect, calm and trout green with bait active all around. Only took me 2 casts into the first gut and a 18" trout ate the spook for breakfast, I knew it was ON! I had 3 trout and was starting to talk a lil trash to little man who hadnt hooked up yet, when all of a sudden I hear "daddy, I think I got a big one!" I looked over and sure enough his rod was bent over and the little Zebco was screaming! I told him to keep the rod up and keep some pressure on and git that sucker in! I let him do all the work and he made me proud, when fish was about 10 yds out it came up and rolled and I could tell he had a very nice fish. He wore her out and when she finally tired I helped him get it on the stringer, his first trout of the day was 24", not a bad start...and I never caught a fish over 22" all morning! We caught fish fairly steady for an hour or so, was awesome watching my son do his thing and see how good of a lil fisherman he's becoming, I was proud. We kept a few fish to fry up and let several go back. I caught several trout on tops, sand eel jr and one on Brown Lure while he tore em up on shrimp, once bite slowed I threw a few shrimp at em too. Prob could have caught a few more but I was enjoying hanging next to him and didnt ever move too far away. Was a morning I wont soon forget with my favorite fishing partner in the world. And if this motivates him to keep making strait A's that sounds good to me!
