Iphone 4 update help

I have tried several times to download and install the new iOS 5 on my iphone 4 from my itunes on my laptop but it has never worked. I have tried turning off firewalls and everything but still to no avail. Truth be told it hasnt bothered me that much except I am unable to buy new ringtones for the phone with the old OS....so, is it possible to download directly to your iphone? I have wifi at the church so a steady connection isnt a problem most days.

I download directly to my phone it's the only way I can do it

I downloaded the last 1 or 2 updates, directly with my Iphone4. Setting>General>Software Update. I need to update to the lastest one.

Connected to WIFI for faster update, but the last one I was 3G only.
My Ipad2 updated the same way.

thats where I have looked for it but was unable to locate anything about software there.... who knew I would be stuck in the dark ages with a iphone 4

My wife has an iPhone also her update was available two days before my phone

if only that were the case, I tend to lean more to blaming the goof using it.

Open iTunes, connect iPhone via USB cable. When it shows up on the left side, click on it, then click on check for update in the center of big window.

done all this---- but it downloads for an hour or so and then tells me the connection timed out and there was an error downloading the new software. I have turned on and off firewalls to no avail and this is why I was hoping I could just download directly to my phone instead of going through itunes on my laptop

Do you have the latest version of iTunes, 10.6.1?
You may have to uninstall/reinstall iTunes.
Other than that, maybe take it to BestBuy or somewhere and have them look at it.
