Well, even though I am not old by any means, I have dealt with 3 shoulder surgeries to my left arm and am in the process of putting off being seen by the doctor for my right shoulder. The surgeon told me 2 years ago that the right shoulder would need done soon as well, just have been putting it off. Anyway here's what I'm looking at, I traded a guy a set of 70# limbs for my Reezen 7.0 and he is sending me a set of 50# ers. I also have a Z7 that has 65# limbs on it and am seriously considering selling them or trading them for a set of 50# ers. Question is this, for those that shoot 50# do you notice any issues with penetration on game, speed differences, or lack of ability to shoot 60 yards? My draw length is 28.5 and my bows are tuned to perfection, just don't want to hinder my hunting by dropping to 50# limbs. I will be matching my arrow weight and spine accordingly. Thanks in advance for your replies.

You'll be fine for most hunting. Shooting an animal at 60 yards....I can't say since I've never thought of doing that.
I say like above to match your spine to the draw weight and shoot around 9 or 10 grains per inch with a Cut on Contact BH.
Some will argue that the heavy arrows will make your bow to slow, it might, that's something you'll have to experiment with.
My opinion is when the arrow gets to the target the heavier arrow will compensate for your draw weight carrying more KE and Momentum therefore it'll do more work.
I'm shooting a 60 lb Z7 with 435 grain FMJ's at 268 fps. I'm more than happy with it. Also if you're worried about a slower bow shooting long range remember that's what range finders and multi pin sights are for.
Good luck and keep shootin.Last edited by Slick8; 05-14-2012, 08:27 AM.

i'm in a similar case as you and have been calling shops and pricing 50# limbs.
Yes, Uncle Ted preaches it, along with Dwight Schuh who kills elk, caribou and MOOSE,
all with 50# equipment. proper tuning and Sharp fixed blade heads should do the trick.
i don't believe i would go super light on the arrows if you are dropping 15-20#'s in weight, so a good, mid-weight range arrow should be fantastic.

I kill all kinds of stuff with my 50# stickbows and have no problems with penetration (except maybe on the shield area of big boar hogs). I can't say anything about the 60yds thing as I don't have sights so I don't shoot that far. I would think that with at the speed of a compound though, that 60yds would not be much of an issue. You just need to set a pin for it.
As mentioned above, make sure that your set-up is well tuned and don't go too light on arrow weight.

i have watched a 22" draw 35-40lb bow shoot all the way through a bunch of hogs and deer with 10gpp arrows and a good fixed blade head. you will have no problems with the 50lb set up with a good medium weight arrow. when i was shooting a compound i shot 58lbs at 28" with slick tricks or 1 3/4 grim reapers and always got a pass through.
