    Identify the bug.

Our ranch forman has been seeing lots of these bugs around, says they are eating the leaves from our mountain laurels and spanish oak at our ranch in the Hill Country.

These are the pictures I have, yes they are ina bottle, no I'm not taking them out.

I've never seen these before, anyone know what they are? Look like some kind of a grasshopper or cricket.

They are katydids like a couple of the others said. They are usually nocturnal but not always. Similar to a grasshopper but not.

Pretty sure they aren't katydids, I took entomology this semester at A&M. They're orthopterans like grasshoppers, crickets and katydids though. I'll look up the family name in a bit.

Really? Maybe I have a different katydid in my head.
I've never seen one with the red coloration and the hook on the tail.

If anyone out there could get a little more detailed it would be great.

Saying katydid is like saying cricket.

They are a type of cricket, kinda like a camel cricket. Been too long since I took entomology, but I will try to narrow it down.

It is a species of Katydid and not a mole cricket. That appendage on the back will cut you like a razor blade if you are not careful.

I am not a bug expert, but I am guessing they havent made it to adulthood yet. Which explains the lack of wings and coloration. If you have an aquirium, put them in there and provide some habitat and see what they do over the next month or so.
