    To Build or Buy....22-250

    so here is the deal.

I have started hunting with my 22-250 and was absolutly blown away by its performance. I knew it was a good round but had always used my 30-06.

My dad has gotten into reloading for his .223 and has shot so many different rounds and has finnally settled on one he likes the best and it is devestating on anything he shoots. I want to work up more loads for my 250, going to try the barnes bullets and heavier pills up to 70 grains. they are long and need the faster twist.

I am looking for a gun with a 1-8 twist. I have not found an off the shelf with that twist, unless I am mising it.

My current one is a rem 700, would you junk the barrel, stock, and trigger? only use the action and build up?

or sell it as is and buy new? not looking for any other type of caliber so that is out of the question. Are the aftermarket barrels out there worth the money they cost and can the rem 700 action be tuned to perfection?

    thanks ryan

I know this might not help you much but I have a savage predator in all brush camo in a 22-250 and love it..one of the most accurate rifles I own! I shoot sub MOA with box ammo and using the nikon coyote special scope which is not easy to target shoot with!

      I think Savage makes a 1-10 22-250. For a 1-8, you'll have to rebarrel yours. I'd go with a 1/9 or 1/10.

My first question is what's the condition and value of your current Mod 700?

You're right in that you're not likely to find that 1:8 twist for shooting the heavier bullets.

My thought is if the current rifle is of good value then sell it and buy the cheapest beater rifle you can find for a custom build.

You may be able to pocket a couple extra $$$ in savings that way.

I know that this is not likely on your list but Gander Mountian is Sugar Land has a used CZ in 250 for $599. They should be willing to deal as it's been there for a while and someone recently dropped it putting two large dents in the cheek piece.

        Good luck.

If it was me I'd use the 700 style action. You can sell yours and put a lil extra money with it and get a stiller action and save money in the long run. Or spend the $ in the machining of your action. But if I already had the short action I'd just use is cause it will speed up the process instead of waiting several months on an action. Just my .02 and I'd wouldnt cheap out on barrels either kreiger is expensive but is one of best bar none.

To shoot the heavier pills you will need a 1:8 twist with the Barnes bullets. I do know of any factory rifle with a twist rate that fast in 22-250.

You can rebarrel that rifle pretty inexpensively using a Shilen barrel. of course you can spend a lot using some of the premium manufacturers.

Changing the trigger and stock is totally up to you and can be done at a later date as additional funds allow.
