    Thinking about a Dog

This past summer both of our family pets "dogs" past they where old. I have said time and time again that I am not getting another dog, but seeing how my son really misses them. I am considering getting another dog, but this time would like for them to be useful as well. Can you give me some good hunting dogs that make good family dogs as well, I have small grand children so have to keep that in mind as well.
    Thank you
    JC

I'm a big fan of Lacy dogs.
My 3 year old grand daugther lays all over mine with no problems.
VERY protective of the kids and a great help when tracking is needed

Not sure what all you hunt, but Drahtaars are good all around dogs. Mine points upland, retrieves waterfowl and tracks a little (trainer deficiency, not dog related.)

Consider a Blue Heeler they probably won't hunt but I would not put it past one. Might work for tracking.....They are one of the smartest breeds around. I know I'm a little biased.

I have a lab and she is great dog but I think if I had to do it over I would probably go with a smaller breed maybe JRT or something similar. From what I have read and seen they have great prey drive and are very smart.

                      Playa,

we just got a female drath & has settled in into a great family member...only 12 weeks but she and the viz are best buds. She and the wife have bonded especially tight.

I had every intention of getting a male similar to yours with a good beard, but I always seem to let the pups pick me. Zada is solid liver accept for a white patch on her chest and no facial hair.

The viz is way more easy to maintain with no undercoat, but I have to admit they make an interesting pair w/ opposites in every way.

GSP or Kurzhaar (their German descendants and tested counterparts) are excellent dogs. I have one of those as well that has been retired from "working"

BTW how many threads are you going to make out of this question?
