Injector cups on 7.3L...anyone ever replaced?

Anyone ever replaced the injector cups on a 7.3l PSD? I'm getting some diesel fuel in my coolant so I've got a good idea that I have one or more cracked injector cups.

If you've done it, how bad was it? If you've had it done, how much $ did it cost you?

I can get the injector cups, new injector seals and o-rings, and the tools needed for removal and replacement for about $350.00, but I'm not real sure that I want to tackle it. I'm pretty good with cars, but I'm not real sure about this one.

    Any thoughts?

Found this on you tube for you Rudey. This looks fairly easy. But of ourselves they are selling a tool.

Yeah, I've seen several videos and you're right, it doesn't look too hard.

BUT...they always show that left bank of injectors that they're working on, never the right. I think there's a reason for that!

I've done quite a few of them. It's pretty straight forward. If you're mechanically inclined you should have no problem.

I think the left bank just doesn't have as much stuff in the way. Easier for demonstrations probably. I know on my 5.4L the left bank isn't as cluttered with other stuff.

The passenger side valve cover can be a bugger to get off. Have to take off the dip stick, and the far-back bolt is a bear. But do-able. Driver side isn't bad.

Once you get the VC off is should be a breeze.

You should come to Uncle Bucks at 5 today and we can discuss the right side over a cold adult beverage BTW....We have officially named our pre-RMEF meeting at the bar the "Safety Committee Meeting"

Just for grins I checked the Ford dealership about replacing the cups.

                  Between $2000 and $2500.

Looks like I'll be replacing some injector cups real soon!

It's a pain in the tail, but doable. It will take you a while, probably a whole weekend to do it the first time. If you have to do it again, it will be much quicker. I left off the farthest back valve cover bolt after fighting it for an hour the first time I did it. Just make sure to get all the fuel that leaks into the cylinders out before re-installing the injectors. I use a turkey baster type squeeze ball pump. Works pretty good. Then just barely bump the starter when you get it back together to make sure it's not trying to hydraulic. I do it with the covers off right after the injectors went in so it's easier if they need to come back out to re-drain the cylinders

edit: After changing them on a 7.3, if you then go change injectors on a 5.9, you'll be able to do it in a matter of minutes

I had it done at the dealership in my local town they can check each one and found one of mine was cracked. I paid 1,100.00 and that was with a oil and air filter change at the same time

But was that just for the one? The estimate I got was for replacing all eight.

Are you going to do it yourself? If so, click here for the eBay link to the removal/replacement tools and 8 injector cups, injector seals, orings, etc...

Alright, I tackled this yesterday. It is a pain in the butt, but doable! Here are some crappy cell phone pics that I took as I went along.

Remove valve covers (and everything in their way) to get to the injectors.

With the proper tools, you can extract the old injector cups...

...until you get all four of them on one side.

Clean out the ports before installing the new injector cups.

You're gonna have the injectors out, so you might as well rebuild them with new seals and o-rings.

Then you reinstall the injectors and replace all of the 900 other pieces you had to take off just to get to them!

It's no too bad of a job, but can be frustrating at times working in the constrained areas! It was well worth the $365 in tools to save over $2000.00.
