    Need your thoughts and advice

    Need your opinion and advice.
I have had horses at a rental barn for about four years and was one of the original renters when it started up. It had previously been a rental place in the past but had been abandoned, and took a lot of work to get back up and running. A piece of equipment ( arena drag) had been left there from some previous renter. I cut this equipment out of trees and weeds and made some welding repairs so I could pull behind my tractor to keep the arena in riding shape. Yesterday a man showed up like he owned the place and said he would be back to get his drag next week. it appears to be his. Problem is I would like to keep the drag and had put my time and money in it to be able to use it. How should I handle this?

    Thanks

Talk to the owner of the rental place or whomever you rent from, sounds like it might belong to them if they bought the place with the stuff already on it.

I'd say that if he (the guy who showed up) left it there more than a couple months it constitutes abandonment and he no longer ownes the drag. Since it was abandoned and you made repairs it now belongs to you. But I'd definatly play the abandoned card when he showes up to get it.

Pull out the torch and put it back the way it was.

Charge him for the work and storage of the drag...after you explain to him the situation of course.

ask the guy who showed up for proof of ownership.

if he can prove that it is his give him a bill for repairs you preformed to it....

If it appears to have been his that he left there (no matter how long he left it there) then I would give it back to him and be glad I had a cheap drag for a short period of time and then go buy my own drag. It's not my drag, it's his

If the place changed hands 4 years ago with the drag there, he doesn't have a leg to stand on. He just saw that it had been repaired, and now wants it back. I'll be ****ed If I'd let him have it.

Lets say you get on a new deer lease and the current owners of the land have only owned the land for 1 yr. You and your freinds are out there setting up some stands one weekend and a random fellow pulls up to your camp and says that he was on a lease here 2yrs ago under the previous landowner and thinks he had accidentally left a feeder on the place when they left and he would like to grab it real quick if it is still there. He describes the feeder and it's location and it appears to be valid and true.

SURELY you would let the fellow go grab his feeder

He MIGHT get it back but it would be with a bill for repairs that would make him think about just how bad he wanted it.
If he just came and took it I would file a report on it for theft and give his information to the officer that took the report

Maybe but maybe not too. If he had not been out to get it for 2yrs I would think he was not too worried about it. And for the record if I left something for 2yrs on a place that was not mine (ie owned or leased) I would not expect to get it back.
Now if there were circumstances such as him being deployed, land tied up in legal battle, etc that would be different

The property belongs to you. Finders keepers. I would load it up and take it home, or get your torch fired yp and undo the repairs you made.
