Word of warning: acorns can be dangerously toxic in too high of levels. Deer are resistant but cattle are not. I've heard its because deer just eat the insides which are low in toxins. I've heard of cattle dying in drought years from their diets being acorn heavy. This is for anyone that may have cattle on their ranch or lease.

Not only is this safer, but it forces more nutrients to the top portion of the tree which increases the growth rate.
Don't beat the bark off, just bang it a few times in different spots. Been beating the same select trees for years and keep killing deer under them

Pruning oaks in the spring can kill Oaks also due to Oak wilt, if you prune, do do in fall or winter.
