    ? for the veterinarians

I am looking at getting a new pup. I know that parvo is bad in our area (Waco) and I lost several pups years ago. I need to know the best way to make sure that I do not have that problem again.

Vaccinate and revaccinate until it has sufficient antibodies against the virus. Keep it away from heavily populated dog areas until its about a year old. This may not be perfect, but better than nothing. If you chose not to do anything, hope the pup picked up enough maternal protection during nursing.

How often on the Vaccinations? Not going to be around other dogs.

Make sure u vaccinate at 6, 9, and 12 weeks. I also keep my pups out of the dirt if I know there have been parvo episodes in the past. No cheap vaccines from feed stores. Get directly from your vet or have them do for you.

Four sets of vaccines 3-4 weeks apart each starting at the 6-9 week range. Your vets protocol should be similar.

not many folks know about them but google the neo-par vaccine and buy a vial. It is only the parvo vacc so you aren't over vaccinating with the other innoculations and it covers all three strains of the parvo virus.

Thanks for all the info. I was raised around dogs and spent all my life aroud them. Never saw dad take them to the vet that many times but after loosing the out of a litter I am plaing it safe. The new pup will not be near the old pen(a couple of 100 yards)

You don't want to leave out distemper though. I see almost as many due from that as I do parvo.

There is a clinic in Waco that will do the Distemper/Parvo, as was recommend here. It is not but $20 per trip. Not Bad I found their prices on line

Yea, I meant after the first and second set, I personally don't want to keep giving 5 in 1's so I use the neo par vaccine to avoid that but still protect against parvo. Sorry, should have been more clear.

X10! Buying vacines from feed stores is a crap shoot. I personally lost four of the finest beagle/treeing walker pups, (Superbeagles), using feedstore "puppyvax". As I understand it, parvo/distemper is an airborn virus, thereby not requiring direct exposure to un-vacinated dogs. Not trying to be funny, but it does appear from my 20 years of raising a variety of dogs. That purebreds dogs do appear to contract parvo/distemper at a much higher rate than the common street cur. Perhaps it is due to the street cur's mom passing on some degree of immunity to these virus's to her pups. C'ya
