A 10 foot deep moat would probably work too.

Electric fence around the flowerbeds. Plug it in until he gets popped once or twice, then unplug it, but leave the wire up for a while. After a few months, you can take the wire down and you'll be fine. That's how my dogs learned where they were and were not allowed to go. I took the wire down, but they still won't go near the off limits areas, they know better.

I tried with the underground fence, my dog is so stubborn she knew all she had to do is take the pain for a little while and she would keep running till she was past the radio frequency of the shock collar for the underground fence. It was kind of funny to watch. Before she would get to the fence she would squint up her eyes then start yelping but keep going then start wagging her tail all happy sniffing around playing. When I would be out there with her she would not do it. But when she thought she was not being watched she would ALWAYS run thru it. She is still just as stubborn and does what she wants when we are not around. She is always an perfect angel when someone is around. But when no one is looking she has to be in the kennel cause she will get in the trash, dig, tear up the bed, couch floors, walls. She is the best and worst dog I have ever owned.

Simple obedience works a world of wonders... 5 months old is plenty old enough for this...

And FTR, I'm not a fan of electro-shock therapy on dogs... WAY too many dogs have been ruined by them being used improperly and breaking a dog's spirit... Once you break a dog's spirit, you can forget doing anything worthwhile with him... He'll never trust you again...

E-collar will work great if you use it properly and that means NOT USING IT AS PUNISHMENT! You use them as "pressure" to encourage a dog to do a task he/she ALREADY knows - by giving light stimulation as the command is given, and stopping the stimulation the instant compliance is given, you make it EASIER for the dog to do the "right" thing. I use them for training my pups but it takes training to learn when/where/how to use one.

Incorrect use of an e-collar (not called a "shock collar" anymore) is totally counterproductive and can ruin a dog. If you want to use one, LEARN to use it properly!

You can train your dog to stay out of just about anything if you work at it hard enough but you may have an easier time just installing a run or tie-out that gives the dog room but no access to flower bed.

                            Good luck.
