One of my main goes this year has been to train my 2 1/2 year old lab to track deer. Up until this weekend she had been on two mock trails, and she did very well. They were easy tracks though, but she is just starting out. This weekend one of my lease mates made a good shot on a buck, with a really, really good blood trail. He tracked the deer until he got to a fenceline, and then came back to camp. We took Lola down and got her started out from the begining. I had to put her back on the blood a couple of times, she seemed to be tracking downwind of the trail, but I do not have any trust in her at this point since she is so inexperieced. She did really well toward then end of the trail, then she stopped and put her nose staight up in the air. I looked up and there was the buck, about 20 yards away laying in the brush.
She has a ways to go, but if I work with her I think she will make it. I have been scavenging blood around deer camp like a vampire so I can work with her in the off season. I wanted to say thanks to all who post info about tracking on here. Especially SaltwaterSlick and Wildman who use labs, but also Cotton, Sika, JerryG and others who share their information. I think I was more excited to see her find that deer than if I had taken a buck myself this weekend. Also thanks to Finatic, he is the one who gave me Lola over a year ago. Yes, I got her free from the TBH classifieds. She is a great dog!
