    oaks

Arorns were everywhere on our lease this year.

How do you tell the difference between white oaks and other oaks?

Since the crop was so good this year what will next year bring?

Hopefully several years without any. I've never seen them this bad in 40+ years hunting.

White oak leaves have rounded lobes. Red oak leaves are pointy. There are probably other ways to tell, but that's what I know. If you cut them down and make lumber, it's real easy to tell them apart, but then the deer lose interest.

Live oak are technically white oak, but I don't know how the deer feel about the acorns when compared to red oak.

I've always gone by what ^ he said! (when scouting public land) and have never had any major problems with telling the difference or finding white oak vs. red oak 'motts' or groves or stands of them.
Once they are located you can easily verify the amount of deer activity between the two.
Red oaks are a choice of 'last resort' in a poor acorn year and are bitter tasting. White oak are like 'candy' and first choice. They offer the deer more nutrients and carbs for putting on their winter weight!
