    Oak tree question

We have an oak tree in the front yard that grows little "oak tree sprouts" around it. Someone said they grow from the roots of the main tree. Is there anything that will kill these without killing the grass or the main tree itself? Or what's a way to get rid of them other than mowing. They always come back.

If it had acorns, then it could possibly be from the acorns getting buried in the dirt. I know my live oak does this.

I'm pretty sure it's root sprouts.
I just googled it and I guess you can't use herbicides.

I learned years ago in a class on oak wilt, that many times a grove of oak trees are really one tree. An oak tree can have many trunks off of one root syatem.

The best thing is to keep the roots in shaded areas like a ground cover......

Some species sprout those from the roots - not from acorns. X2 on the no herbicides. My neighbor did not realize they were attached to the main tree and sprayed the sprouts with RoundUp which killed 4 nice mature oaks. As far as I know all you can do is snip them off at the ground - or let them eventually turn into more trees.
