    Towing Question

May be a dumb question but I cannot seem to find the answer I'm looking for..

I have a 1975 Jeep CJ that want to turn into a hunting rig. It has a tow bar on the front of it. It is unregistered and hasn't been inspected in years.

Can I legally tow it to a shop to be worked on in town without registration, inspection, and insurance?

Can I legally tow it behind my truck to the lease without registration, inspection, and insurance?

I have a trailer that can handle it, but would rather just tow it directly behind the truck..

    What does the GS say??

I think as long as you have the brake/blinker lights that plug into your trailer hookup on the back of it you should be fine. Not going to say what I would/have done because it is not necessarily legal.

Trailer is much safer assuming you take care to strap it down properly, and have working trailer brakes.

I use 6 straps to fasten a vehicle to a trailer: one at all four corners, from the axle to the trailer; one front and rear across the frame to suck the suspension down so it doesn't wiggle on the trailer (I like a solid load, not one that's bouncing and gyrating while traveling)

You will not hurt the springs or the shocks by sucking them down for a trip (even though some will argue that it will)

I've seen horrible things happen when flat towing, although there are some that absolutely love it.

I pulled a non running truck to a shop here around town just fine. I called the PD and asked them about it first and they said as long as your doing it safely and there are working signal lights on the towed vehicle we would be fine. Passed 2 cops on the way and never got a second look.

Don't know what's legal but did it with my old Bronco a couple of years ago and never had any PD or State Troopers say a word. Just had working brake/turn lights.
And that was across several counties several times...

You can do all that you mentioned legally as long as the tail lights work as if pulling a trailer. You are towing the vehicle not driving it so you do not need tags, sticker or registration

We do it all the time with both our jeeps! Although they are both legal to drive, you need working lights...

We use the magnetic towing lights and pop them on the back of the jeep and take off!

Bout to tow one to the coast this weekend this way

I see unregistered, and probably uninsured or licensed, vehicles being towed south to Mexico all the time and the state troopers never pull them over.
