Yep, too big of an entry hole is what tells me the bullet came apart on entry. More than likely didn't have much more than jackets fragments and lead dust hit anything vital. I killed a nice 22" south Texas buck years back with a hotrodded .264 and a thin jacket bullet. All I got was a big blow up wound on entry and a tiny fragment of jacket cut the heart. Very fortunate to find the deer in that brush.

        17 HMR
        22 LR
        223
        243 or 6mm
        7.62x39
        30.06
        7mm rem mag
        300 Win mag
        50 cal
        20 gauge
        12 gauge
        9mm
        357 Mag
        45 ACP

Those would be MUST Haves. You can kill anything on the planet with such and If ammo ever became a rarety you would be able to still get these calibers (with the excpetion of the 6mm and 50 cal).

Meaning if Stuff Hit The Fan you would be able to have PLENTY of rounds for each... you cant just walk into walmart in most places and pick up weatherby, ackley improved, or other "wildcat" chamberings.. Although there are SOME AWESOME calibers out there in those wildcats... the 257 ROY (wby) is one of those calibers.. and at 85-100 grain the dude should have never been shooting a caribou with it in the first place.

But this is just my personal list. You need to think about all the things you would like to hunt in your lifetime.

        small game = .17, 22, 223
        Medium range game = 223, 243 30.06, 7mm
        Larger game = 30.06, 7mm, 300 win mag
        Dangerous game= 300 win mag, 50 cal

Small to Medium Foul: Dove, quail, = 12 or 20 gauge.
Large Foul: Ducks, Geese, Turkey, Crane, Pheasants = 12 gauge

came back to add the 7.62x39... not really a hunting caliber but EVERYBODY needs an AK or an SKS.

I've heard that some/most guides won't let you bring a .270 and have a .30-06 as a minimum for elk. Always kind of chapped me because I'm a .270 guy myself and think its as much of a cannon as an '06 with the 150 grain premium bullets.

My cousin has a very nice gun collection (he has reaped the benefits of a sugar momma for the last 20 years ) and he LOVES his Browning .22 Hornet and his .264 Win Mag. I know Dale Moser swears by that gun too. Ballistics are inpressive but so is the recoil according to Chuckhawks table. I'll bet it's a deer slaying son of a gun though.

For a standard collection I'd say
                        22LR
                        22mag
                        .223 or .22-250 your choice
                        .243
.257 Roberts or 25-06 or both
                        .264 WM
                        .270
                        7-08 or .280 or both
                        7 Mag
                        .308
                        30-06
                        300 WM

I personally have started a 7mm collection but only have 2 different ones at the time
                        7mm Mauser
                        .280
                        7.21 Tomahawk

                          One each of the following:

                          22 rifle

                          Win 243

                          30-06

Savage 99 in what ever cal you like.

                          Win 71 in 348 cal.

                            Must have?

                            1) .22

                            2) 30-30

                            3) a high caliber rifle in the Caliber of your choice (in the end they will all work out to 400 yards). If I could only have one, probably 30.06 or .308.

Anything else is just icing on the cake.

Whatever happened to the .35 Whelen? It was all the rage in the late 80's/early 90's?

                                IMO
                                22, .45, 5.56mm(not .223), .308win, and 300win or 338 lapua
this should cover anything you want to do..
